The Sunshine Coast beaches welcome many visitors throughout the year,
homo sapiens plus others - and by
‘others’ I’m talking migratory shorebirds, birds that are here for their share of waterside relaxation. These diverse flocks travel thousands of kilometres without a break, before coming to rest and/or nest on our shores. You may see local species intermingled with special summer visitors, all roosting on the sandbanks before taking off again.

Shorebirds need to be left undisturbed to rest and recuperate and we can offer them protection by ensuring that they are not disturbed, especially after flying tens of thousands of kilometres from the Arctic to spend the summers with us.

How to ensure that shorebirds are not disturbed:
o Observe quietly from a distance, using binoculars, if necessary
o No running at flocks of shorebirds to make them take flight
o Preventing surf kites from flying over roosting and feeding birds
o If coming ashore at a bird site, landing well away from them
o Taking your rubbish home with you
o Keeping dogs under control so that resting and feeding birds are not frightened – four-legged and two-legged friends are not a good combination.
