What an unusual name for an event! However, if you are reading this, it must have caught your eye!

challenges team to drive cars worth less than $1000 across some of Australia's most formidable roads and all in the name of charity.

is not a race but is rather a challenge to achieve the unthinkable… to drive cars worth just $1,000 across Australia.

This is going to be great fun, but perhaps not for everyone! Those people who do not like to get their hands dirty or spend time away from civilisation are probably not going to enjoy this one. But for the rest of us, it will be an adventure that will be exciting and great fun. If you want to do something that is just that little bit different, then this is the event for you. It will be memorable but most importantly, it is for those people who are willing to help raise much-needed funds for charity.

Many of us have been affected by cancer, me included, in one way or another. Whether it is/was a parent, a close friend, someone in your family or perhaps you yourself are battling this disease as I currently am. It is a nasty disease that has probably touched the majority of us in one way or another.

The aim of the event is not only to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Council but also to offer support and a friendly ear to those that have suffered or are suffering.

Over the last eight years, these box rallies have raised over $17.5 million for the Cancer Council! This is indeed a tremendous effort and one that is so welcome. This event is officially endorsed and supported by the Cancer Council.

This year the teams will be driving their shitboxes over 8,700 km in two separate shitbox rallies.

2019 Spring is the Melbourne one and will be held from 19th October to 25th October 2019 and will be travelling from Melbourne to Townsville via Birdsville. This gives you plenty of time to register and get ready for the event!

This is going to be such great fun - teams are driving their Shitboxes 3614kms from Melbourne to Townsville via Birdsville.

Each two-person team needs to raise a minimum of $5,000 (but hopefully a lot more) to participate in the rally. As there are two of you, it is only $2,500 each. Cancer Council has helpful fundraising tips in a Welcome Pack which they provide. We'll also let you in on a few fundraising hot tips that we know work well.

Once this money has been raised you're given up to $500 back to go towards the cost of your car. Teams are also provided with a $500 fuel budget. Anything above $500 comes out of your own pocket.

Each team is made up of two drivers and one car - this is because they may need all the extra room they can get for passengers of machines that don't manage the entire journey. Organisers can only take a certain number of people on the journey, so by keeping to two people per team, they can get more teams into the rally.

This trip is definitely not about creature comforts!

It's a challenge, and it'll be dirty, dusty, maybe muddy, and tough at times. However, it WILL be an amazing and unforgettable experience and something that you'll remember forever. You will be camping at all stopovers, so you'll need to bring your own tent, sleeping bag and mattress or swag.

The two nights after the end of the rally you stay in hotels. For these, you will be given discounted rates and you will be given the booking details soon after you've signed up.

During the rally, your meals will be organised where possible as well as your camping and stopovers. Initially, you will receive an itinerary with a list of what will be happening at each place and any costs that you need to factor in. You'll get plenty of advanced notice before departure if you need to take care of your own lunches, etc.

History of
was founded by James Freeman after both his parents died of cancer 12 months apart.

James and his brother nursed their parents through the last stages of their lives. When his father died he was devastated. It was a sad time and James needed something to give him an interest and help him to make a difference.

has always been more about having fun and not taking the serious task of raising money for cancer research too seriously. James spent many months working out how the rally would work and how he could make the whole experience a real challenge for those entering. He knew he would need support to grow awareness of and participation in the rally. Over time he has achieved that as the event is now on regularly and indeed helps raise so much money for this worthy cause.
