Queer musical comedy duo Samantha Andrew and Mel O'Brien have launched their latest show
Shit-Wrecked! at
MICF 2022 . I saw their previous show
No Hat, No Play! The Cabaret in last year's MICF, and couldn't wait to see the follow up. Their style of comedy is no-holds-barred, in your face, completely over the top for a full hour. And so it was with
Shit-Wrecked!
In
Shit-Wrecked! Mel and Sam take us on a cruise. Not, as you might think, to some exotic tropical location, but on our own slightly less exotic
Spirit of Tasmania en route to Devonport. The show captures some of the onboard activities and entertainment, and gives insights into some of the passengers. There are the children of anti-vaxxers and the misunderstood MYKI inspectors. There is an encounter with the 'very cold' princess, not to be confused with any Disney character that may look vaguely similar.
Later, back in Melbourne, there are the Luna Park employees, who have just knocked off from their shift on the Ghost Train.
These and other tales are told through original songs and stories. Some numbers are so grand they wouldn't sound out of place in a hit stage musical, while others are 'played' on guitars with broken strings. The common element throughout is the energy and joy of Mel and Sam, and their clever ability to sing, dance and entertain their way through anything. Their caricatures are witty and always funny.
Once again, the choreography and stage direction were tight, and expertly executed.
Mel and Sam are the whirling dervishes of comedy, taking the audience on a frenzy of fun.
Shit-Wrecked! isn't a show, it's a journey! So don't miss the boat if you're after an hour of funny, high spirited and uplifting entertainment.
On a slightly negative note, on the night we attended, the audio was a bit muffled in places, which was a shame as we wanted to hear every word of that precious scripting! It may have been our front row seating and proximity to the on-stage speakers, but there was definitely an issue.
