Shire Music Theatre has been performing in Sydney's South for nearly 40 years. They describe themselves as a community-based amateur musical theatre group. However, their productions are far from amateur.

I had the pleasure of attending the group's most recent production, "13". I have to admit it has been a while since I have seen a musical but in my younger years I was quite a fan. Within minutes of "13" starting, my love of musical theatre was re-ignited.

" 13 ", with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, tells the story of Evan Goldman as he faces the difficulties of his parent's divorce, a move from bustling New York to a small Indiana town and the battle to make new friends – all just before his 13th birthday. This modern musical encapsulates everything teen; from friendship, bullying, gossiping and acceptance to the first kiss, it is all there and it comes with a huge serving of humour!

"13's" music is original, funny and catchy, and Shire Music Theatre's all kid cast delivered it perfectly - I didn't know that it was possible to hit notes that high or hold notes that long. With their talent for drama, music and dance the performers brought to life the emotion, enthusiasm and energy of being a teenager. Such mature performers at such a young age; it is clear that many have a huge future in the industry.

Shire Music Theatre produce between three to four musicals a year which are performed at Sutherland Memorial School of Arts (East Street Sutherland). The theatre is conveniently located near Sutherland train station and there is plenty of parking available on the surrounding streets. With many casual restaurants just around the corner it is easy to grab a bite to eat before the show.
