I am a freelance writer from Sydney, Australia. When I am not daydreaming of faraway places, I am hunting down the next vegetarian restaurant to try.

What a better way to pass a rainy and cold Sydney Sunday than by enjoying a big bowl of heartwarming noodles? Shinmachi in Newtown has got you covered for all your rainy day noodle cravings.
This Japanese run and owned restaurant also has great vegan-friendly variations of classic Japanese dishes like tonkatsu curry, gyoza (pan-fried dumplings) and of course, ramen! It is a great place to eat for meat lovers and vegans alike!
Once you head up the stairs, you will be greeted by the loud shot 'Irasshaimase' - a traditional and warm Japanese welcome. Choose between cosy booth seats or tables in the open area. My tip - grab a seat near the window, there is a great view of Newtown below and it is very nice to watch the rainfall and people watch as you slurp on your noodles!
My friend ordered the 'Vegan tantanmen', a Japanese take on the Sichuan noodles. The broth of this dish combines the spice from the rayu chilli oil with soymilk and sesame paste. The noodles have been hand-pulled and have the perfect bounce when you bite into them.
I ordered the 'Vegan tonkatsu with chashu', and it was delicious. Upon the first bite, I couldn't believe that this was vegan. The rich and creamy broth was perfect and tasted so similar to actual tonkatsu ramen broth! The chashu added a sweetness to the dish and was the perfect contrast against the savoury soup.
With an array of Japanese drinks and beverages like Kirin beer and sake, Shinmachi is reminiscent of a Japanese izakaya (bar) plus ramen joint, all rolled into one.
Want a big meal of noodles? Shinmachi is the place to go. Want to grab a couple of drinks and try Japanese bar food/tapas? Shinmachi won't let you down!
The next time you are in Newtown, don't forget to stop by Shinmachi for a fabulous meal! I have lived in Japan for a year and have tried many great vegan ramens in my life - Shinmachi does a great job with their take on vegan ramen!
