Rock 'n' Roll is a dance style we associate with the 50's in America. It goes hand in hand with that fun filled era after WWII, when the world breathed a sigh of relief and life could be better again. So dust off the black and white shoes, the petticoats and spotted dresses. Slick your hair and 'don' your blue jeans, for the pounding beat and rockin' dance halls echoing those far off days are here again.

There's a whole 'other world' out there when it comes to dance, be it Hotrod car clubs and their band of followers, or regular dance 'junkies' who keep movin' to the beat. It is still alive and well, so come take a look…

Shine Dancing is a rock 'n' roll dance school making life brighter in the east, in the Yarra Valley. Audrey Plunkett has brought dance to the area, and has taught Irish Dance in the past for 15 years.

The unique moves and styling being introduced by Audrey brings fresh appeal, and the school's signature to the rock 'n' roll dance fraternity. The Yarra Valley is a fairly quiet area in regards to dance, but despite this, the approach and teaching methods are proving their worth as the school develops, and participant numbers grow.[BREAK]

Dance has been a part of human society as long as records exist, so why miss out on one of humanities best and most loved pursuits. It is a fabulous social scene and a great way to stay fit, and as far as many are concerned, it beats other sports hands-down for the fun factor and social element. The classes are structured for beginner, and intermediate-advanced dancers. The dance routines are spaced with rock 'n' roll line dances that are performed at a lot of the social dances around Melbourne. These routines include a progressive Cha Cha, just for fun and rock 'n' roll, swing and waltz based routines . Most of the classes are progressive style, so that everyone dances with everyone else in a circle. So, there is no requirement to have a dance partner already, just turn up and dance, and have some fun. If you have never danced before, you will learn from the ground up, with basic moves and when you are comfortable, join the groups who go to social dances and learn faster still![BREAK]

The school has opened and runs classes at the Yarraburn Centre, Yarra Junction every Tuesday night, and Healesville High School Community Centre every Thursday night. Saturday May 10th, was their first social dance, and that was a great success. There were approximately 100 people along for a great night to the sounds of Exploded View, a local band who performed a fine mix of original rock 'n' roll songs and modern songs styled for rock 'n' roll dancing.

The Healesville Performing Arts Centre was a bright venue to host the event, and in time will provide more rock n'' roll social dances for people near and far to enjoy-the place was really rockin'. The cost is $15 dollars for a single class, and $20 dollars for both beginner and intermediate-advanced classes on a single night. So why not come along and see what it is all about, and if you have never danced before, it pays to remember that it takes time. Remember learning to ride a bike when young? You have to fall off a few times and just keep trying until you can! The philosophy is the same for any sport, be it golf, tennis, or football, and of course dancing. You will not be a professional in 5 minutes, but you can have a lot of fun on the road to discovery though! 'Elvis has left the building...'[BREAK]
