Your new summer playground
My tears at the loss of Shadow Electric, the outdoor cinema that took place in the ethereal surroundings of Abbotsford Convent, and at the sad realisation that I would probably never again watch a movie while hundreds of flying foxes soar overhead, were soon stopped by the news that it would not only continue in a new location but also be expanded to include a lineup of outdoor live music, outdoor drinking and outdoor dining.
Now named Shimmerlands, the full on festival will be sprinkled over four main precincts: The Cinema, The Pavilion, Live Music and The Food Quarter. And, no longer a night only event, the hours of outdoor enjoyment have also been expanded, with the fun continuing from 12pm till late.
The Cinema precinct will host the eye-enticing outdoor cinema, which will feature both major releases and contemporary indie films and documentaries, as well as cult classics. Click here for more details about the outdoor cinema and this year's lineup.
The designated chill spot of the festival will be The Pavilion, a large shade structure where you will find the bar, DJs and space to leisurely lounge. Relax, drink and enjoy!
Your nose will no doubt lead you to The Food Quarter with dining establishments like Rockwell and Sons, St Ali, Pho Nom, All Day Donuts, SPQR, Chandong Mumma and Trattoria Emilia making an appearance. In all, 20 of Melbourne's best food providers will be tempting you to enter and eat. Impossible to resist, especially since entry is free.
Both local and international bands are expected to light up The Live Music precinct. So far the only confirmed acts on the music lineup are Parquet Courts, and Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Ska Vendors, Nononsense and Project Ska Collective, who will all be performing at SKA-BQ, a celebration of ska. Shadow Electric are keeping quiet about other upcoming acts, but expect big things and keep your ear to the ground. The precinct will also be gifting free music events to your ears every Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Shimmerlands will be making senses sparkle from Sunday 1 January through to Sunday 26 February 2017 at the University Of Melbourne Parkville Campus. For the full entertainment lineup visit shimmerlands.com.
