Snorkelling at Shelly Beach

Shelly beach is unique place with a not-so-unique name. Located within easy walking distance of the Manly ferry terminal, Shelly beach is an Aquatic Reserve filled with fish, sand and the occasional scuba diver.
It is classified as a 'beginner' location because of its ease. The depth ranges from 2-6m in most places and it is overflowing with animals. It is not uncommon to see squid, octopus, blue gropers or even motorbikes at these depths.
The best way to get there from the city is to catch the ferry from manly. This will take you the better part of an hour. Then walk through the esplanade until you hit the beach, turn right and follow the path.
Take your time if you are walking. Last time I went I almost missed out on seeing two
eastern water dragons . They are residents of the surrounding bushland, and signs proclaim that many other natives animals also reside nearby.
Before you depart on your adventure, make sure to pack everything you need as there is no snorkel store at the beach. I found this one out the hard way. Snorkelling is not as fun when you are time-sharing equipment. Also, there are warm showers and BBQs if that's your thing.
