LA-based Australian singer-songwriter Shelley Segal returns home soon for a brief visit, celebrating her latest single 'Somebody Like You' with a few shows in regional Victoria.
With a rockier edge to her new songs then she's ever had before, she'll be sharing this energy onstage. It's the perfect song to release in the midst of the polarising and supremely topical same-sex marriage debate. Electric guitars wail and drums propel the song forward with a strength that Shelley has harnessed herself, as the chorus soars to the heights of he vocal range. Expect lots of stories and perhaps even a bit of the shiny sheen of shameless LA pop, from this artist/activist whose music expresses not just the way she sees the world, but creates the world she wants to see. The launch show details are as follows.
Fri 29 Dec 2017 - Yard Bird, Hotel Shamrock, corner of Pall Mall & Williamson St, Bendigo. Free Entry 8-11pm / 18 plus
Thu 4 Jan 2018 - Cally Hotel, 112 Fairy St, Warrnambool. Free Entry 8-11pm / 18 plus
Fri 12 Jan 2018 - Paynesville Wine Bar, 1/85 The Esplanade, Paynesville. Tix at the door 7-10pm / 18 plus
Heavy and deep in sound and emotions, 'Somebody Like You' soars with the echoes of Shelly's personal struggle and difficult time when at the age of 18, her family rejected her boyfriend as he wasn't of the same religion, Jewish. Shelley chose to fight for the relationship with her then-partner, left home and moved in with him and his family. Though no longer religious, the extremely painful experience flares up the same emotions and feelings, and an understanding that many people still experience this tension between families, traditions, religion, race, gender and orientation.
The current same-sex marriage vote of which Shelley is a passionate supporter of, is a timely reminder that one cannot help or control who one loves. You cannot love or stop loving someone because it's expected of you
Shelly has been living and working in Los Angeles for over a year and is currently Stateside touring 'Somebody Like You'. Her achievements have been many since making the move overseas, resulting in spending her time writing with different artists, performing non-stop and opening her own publishing company which saw her score a sync with the Emmy-award winning web series Venice.
Shelley will be showcasing at next year's Folk Alliance International Conference in KC and if you're a Patreon, 'Somebody Like You' is here and available. If you're not a Patreon, you can subscribe for $1 a month and receive new songs to download and videos each month, including all new releases. You'll be an integral part of making it happen. Make sure you're a part of the process and catch Shelly 'live' while she's here in Victoria.
