Give your unused coats and blankets to those who need them
As you pull on an extra layer of clothing, sit with the heater on and enjoy a lovely cup of tea during the chilly winter nights, spare a thought for the people doing it tough. There are families and individuals throughout Perth who have nowhere to go, are forced to skip meals to feed their children and are simply caught in a cycle of poverty.
If you want to do your bit to help those in need, you can give up your own winter coat and donate it to The Salvation Army's Shed Your Coat Winter Appeal at Karrinyup Shopping Centre from Tuesday, 5 June to Sunday, 1 July.
The centre will be accepting contributions of winter items, including clothing, coats and blankets and donating them to some of Perth's most vulnerable people and families as part of the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal.
All donations will go to individuals and families who are experiencing financial hardship, unemployment and homelessness during the cold winter months.
Now in its ninth year, the Shed Your Winter Coat Appeal is a call-out to the Perth community to donate coats, jackets, jumpers, baby and children's clothing, new blankets or doonas for individuals and families experiencing some of these hardships.
Karrinyup Shopping Centre is hoping to receive around 3,000 articles of warm clothing, as well as $4,000 in donations for The Salvation Army.
All donated warm clothing and blankets must be in good condition, laundered and clean. The collection bin will be located at Karrinyup Shopping Centre in the Centre Court and will be open from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm on Thursdays and from 12pm to 4pm on Sunday.
The first five people to donate an item each day will receive a free coffee voucher, redeemable at selected cafe outlets in the centre.
The Salvation Army volunteers will be selflessly giving up their time to collect donated items. If you can't spare any items but can spare some time to volunteer for a couple of hours, contact Brooke Castelli at the Salvation Army on 9260 9587 or 0428 085 250, or send an email to Brooke.Castelli@aus.salvationarmy.org
There are plenty of ways to help those in need this winter. Clean out your wardrobe and give all the blankets, coats and jumpers that you simply no longer wear to those who need them the most.
