Boggo Road is by far one of the most popular historic sites in Brisbane. The Gaol hosts a range of tours and events and on Saturday May 20 it will be host the ultimate movie to see in a prison, The Shawshank Redemption . Before the movie, you can also tour the gaol with a choice of one of 3 different tours.

So either book to see the movie by itself or book a movie and tour package for the complete prison experience. If you can't make it on that night, you can always book the tours on other days and they are well worth doing by themselves.

About Boggo Road Gaol

Boggo Raod Gaol is Brisbane's oldest surviving prison and the only surviving example in Brisbane of a gaol that reflects the late 19th century penal philosophy. While the first cell block was constructed in 1883, what remains of the prison was built in 1903.

After decades of problems and protests regarding the poor conditions of the prison it was finally closed in 1992 with the newer prison buildings being demolished. After much discussion on what to do with the site, it has been redeveloped to maintain the historical prison and also develop the area as the Boggo Road Urban Village.

As a result, the old gaol hosts a range of tours and events and has quickly become one of the most visited historical sites in Brisbane.

About Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption is a bit of a contradiction. This highly critically acclaimed movie is based on a Stephen King novella, but it bombed at the box office (possibly because while people loved the movie, no one could remember the name). While being nominated for 7 Academy Awards, it didn't win any.

Since then, this great story about two very different people in prison who form a strong and long lasting friendship through their shared ordeal has gone on to become a hit, initially through video rentals and then through its popularity on TV. Being so popular it was the first movie ever to be shown every day on cable TV.

It is now considered a classic and launched Morgan Freeman's career as a narrator with his memorable voiceovers throughout the film. What better film to see in a prison!

The movie starts at 7:30 pm and is $15 if you just want to see the movie without a tour.

About the tours

Boggo Road offers a range of tours, as part of the movie and tour package you can choose between 3 great tours.

The Ex-inmate Tour is lead by a former Boggo Road inmate. They will tell you stories and share their personal experiences of their time in prison.

Another tour option is the History of Boggo Road Gaol Tour . This tour provides a lot more information about the long history of the prison.

One of the most popular tours is the Escape Tour . Most people who were confined at Boggo Road Gaol wanted to get out. Some decided to do something about that and escaped. Learn the true stories of how they got out.

The tours start at 6 pm and booked with the movie it is $35, a saving of $5 if you booked the tours separately.
