The restaurant in this article, Flint at Shaw Vineyard, is now closed - however the Cellar Door is open as normal.
Stop and smell the roses at this scenic winery
Shaw Vineyard Estate is one of the larger wineries in the Canberra Wine District, just 40 minutes north of the CBD. There are 33 wineries throughout the region, however with so many choices it can be hard to know which one to go to first. Some visitors prefer the smaller boutique wineries who specialise in a few varieties, whereas others prefer to visit the larger ones, such as Shaw Vineyard Estate, who have a large Cellar Door and a wide range to taste and buy. As well as wine tastings, visitors you can also taste-test and buy locally made flavoured oils and condiments and help support local businesses. If you enjoy local produce matched with local wines, then stay for lunch at their restaurant onsite, Flint at Shaw Vineyard, with views out to the stunning rural countryside and sweet-smelling rose gardens.
The property is an impressionist masterpiece in the Springtime, with soft light, roses out in bloom and alpacas quietly grazing over the fence. There are also a few historical houses you can see tucked away as you drive in, which is part of the historical background of this unique location. The Shaw family bought this 19th century property in 1998 and at the time, it was a 700 acre sheep property producing fine wool in the region. Today this cool climate winery, sitting at an elevation of 640 metres, produces Riesling, Semillon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon on 85 acres on the property. You can taste a range of these wines at the Cellar Door and buy some to take home. See here for their range.
Just next door from the Cellar Door is the fine dining, yet relaxed restaurant
Flint at Shaw Vineyard. The food philosophy in this restaurant is to produce high quality modern European cuisine, with seasonal produce from the local area - as well as their own kitchen garden. See the menu here. In the warmer months the outside dining area is the most popular area to dine, with a slight breeze cutting across the verandah, however in the winter months the toasty fireplace inside the restaurant has diners clambering to sit nearby. Throughout the year they also have events at the restaurant such as Mothers Day lunches, Fathers Day dinners, wood fired pizza nights and much more. You can book a table online through the Flint website or if you wish to just turn up, check the Flint Facebook and Weddings at Flint Facebook before your visit, to ensure there isn't a wedding booked in the restaurant.

Shaw Vineyard Estate is on the pricier end of the wineries in the Canberra Wine District, however if you have an appreciation of wine - or have visitors who do - then this is an ideal venue to try their wines and learn more about this award-winning vineyard. Everyone who visits this winery can't help but appreciate its charming rural location and Springtime floral displays - where the only sounds you can hear are the bees buzzing over the blooms.
