Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf - Film Review

After the events of Sharktopus vs Pteracuda (the second film in the franchise), Sharktopus is still out there, somewhere on the coast of the Dominican Republic. Ray (Casper Van Dien from Starship Troopers) and his sidekick, Pablo (Jorge Eduardo de los Santos) are two alcoholic fishermen who owe money to a Voodoo priest called Tiny (Tony Almont). In exchange for their lives, Tiny asks them to bring him Sharktopus' heart.

Meanwhile, mad scientist Dr Rheinhart (Catherine Oxenberg) transforms a misogynist professional baseball player into a hybrid creature with DNA from a wolf and an orca, just because she can.

Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf (2015) is the third and final instalment in the Sharktopus series. Much to my sadness, I have so far been unable to get hold of the second film, Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda, but I doubt that I missed anything that would be vital in order to understand and appreciate this satisfyingly silly movie. It was created by the Syfy channel and directed by Kevin O'Neill (director of Dracano, Dinoshark and Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda).

Like so many sequels, Sharktopus vs Whalewolf is not as good as the original, but I still found plenty about it to like.

For starters, I thought the Whalewolf was neat. Apparently it is based on the Pakicetus, an extinct amphibious cetacean that lived around 50 million years ago. I suppose it is a good thing for humans that there aren't amphibious wolf-like monsters running around today, but my inner 8-year-old still kind of wishes there were. I'm sure they'd make terrible pets, but I still want to pat one. They're even cooler than the space doggos in The Predator .

Sharktopus himself is as you would expect if you have seen the first movie, or even just heard the title. The CGI is as dodgy as you might imagine.

In terms of the plot, owing money to a Voodoo priest is at least an original reason to go hunting a sea monster.

My favourite piece of dialogue was the following exchange between Ray and Pablo:
Ray: Dammit Pablo! I told you we couldn't build a weapon out of household appliances!
Pablo: Now we have no way to kill Sharktopus!
Ray: And no blender!

Sharktopus vs. Whalewolf is another very silly film that is strictly for fans of bad monster movies. It is currently streaming on Tubi .
