Mike & Becky Lucas of Shakespeare's Books.

I first met the owners of Shakespeare's Books and Coffee Shop, Mike and Becky Lucas, at a Get Reading event at the Seaford Library. This was one of several book launches held at Noarlunga Libraries in association with Shakespeare's Books that coincided with the national program Love2Read.

During the year, various writers had participated in this Love2Read program, such as Fiona Higgins - The Mothers' Group, Sophie Thomso - From the Ground Up and Joy Dettman - Wind in the Wires to name a few.

On this occasion, it was the launching of Tim Marshall's book The Organic Gardener . Tim talked to a large gathering about different organic gardening practices that would help grow whatever gardeners wanted, not just fruit and vegetables.

Following Tim's talk many of the attendees looked at his books that were on display and he answered questions and autographed their purchases.

A few days later, I met with Mike and Becky at their Shakespeare's Books and Coffee Shop which is located at 7 Gawler Street, in the historical and arts area of Port Noarlunga with its quaint shops and cafes where parking is free and readily available.

It is a wonderful shop with its colourful presentation and easy to explore layout. On the shelves there are volumes of books covering every subject you would imagine a bookshop to have, from fiction to non-fiction, including Gardening, Self-help, Health and Well Being.

I was particularly attracted to the section, promoting several South Australian writers, especially the Local Authors' section.

Kate Willson, local children's author launching her latest book, "Have a Go Henry.

As I browsed around the shelves, I found a fascinating selection of children's books, toys and a 'kids' area' where they can amuse themselves. There was the latest book byKate Willson called, Have a Go, Henry!

and a number of the nonsense poetry books Mike has written for children. Mike features these books in his poetry workshops that he conducts at schools and libraries. The children have the opportunity to discover poetry and write their own poems in interactive exercises that have proven to be educational as well as a lot of fun.

Another display offered a wonderful range of books for teenage and young adult readers by popular writers such as Robyn Opie Parnell..

Incidentally, if they don't happen to have the book you require on the shelf, they are quite happy to acquire it for you, even the hard to obtain books from overseas.

On display were some beautiful original sketches done with fine pen work and coloured pencils of some of the older local shops such as Shakespeare's Books, by local artist, Chris Williams.

If you happen to desire a brewed coffee with a locally baked cake while you peruse a book, well there is a cosy seating area where you can comfortably sit and relax and do just that.

What is clearly evident in this family owned bookshop is the friendly atmosphere and the pride and effort Mike and Becky take in ensuring their customers are properly looked after and receive the service that will bring them back time and again.

So, the next time you feel the need for a new book or you desire the excitement booklovers feel from exploring a bookshop that offers something special, check out Shakespeare's Bookshop and Coffee Shop.
