Shadow's Light a free event hosted by TYC and Multicultural Arts Victoria , draws on tradition Javanese trance practices from the Royal Court of Central Java - Scrimpi and the unharnessed ecstatic trance practices of East Java - Bentengan/Bull-Trance; a blending of disciplines that include contemporary dance and improvised music.

Mesmerising and without compromise, it's a deep meditation on basic elements of living, quietude alongside the ecstatic, and you can catch it on Friday 7 Dec (8-9.30pm) and Sat 8 Dec (2-5pm) 2018 at the Testing Grounds, 1 City Rd, Southbank. On the Saturday, stay a while or come for the whole afternoon of Shadow's Light - Light Works as short solo and group works by local and international artists occupy spaces within Testing Grounds, falling in with Shadow's Light theme of light works.


Javanese Trance Workshop

Sun 9 Dec 1-5pm - Siteworks, 33 Saxon St, Brunswick


On Sunday 9 Dec 2018 from 1-5pm, you have the rare opportunity to work with Trance leading practitioners in a Javanese Trance Workshop. You'll be introduced to the basic levels of internal focuses and states of trance in relation to kinesthetics and movements. Dancers, actors, musicians and anyone interested in trance-in-performance are welcome to participate. All of these events are presented as a part of Mapping Melbourne 2018 which is an event over 16 days and 14 venues that celebrate our unique Asian Australian identity and highlights positive global creative connections. Exhibiting and performing at some of our most iconic institutions and public spaces, the festival profiles over 100 established and emerging artists from across Australia, China, India, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan.

Mapping Melbourne kicks off with its launch on Fri 30 Nov 2018 from 6.15-9pm at MPavilion, Queen Victoria Gardens, St Kilda Rd, Melbourne. A free event and a preview into the Festival, you need to RSVP by 26 Nov 2018. The Launch will be a night of surprises with a stellar lineup including The Echoes Project, L@NDLESS, UB and more to be announced.

The rest of Mapping Melbourne, 1-15 Dec 2018 involves a full program of visual art, live art, music, dance, public programs and new multidisciplinary collaborations. It's a platform for strengthening arts networks between contemporary independent artists across the Australasian region, building connections through networking that leads to growth in developing new work and establishing ongoing relationships working together and presenting challenging work.
