A bare sheet. A bright spotlight. Six dancing shadows. And then, suddenly, New York poetically appears - the Empire State Building gracing the New York Skyline, an encounter in Central Park, the Statue of Liberty handing out "I love New York" memorabilia and a taxi to JFK.

From New York, the story flies to Australia, floats across the Melbourne skyline in an air balloon and tours the Outback, coming across Australia's iconic animals along the way.

Using nothing but their bodies to form shapes in shadows, Pilobolus, the dance company performing Shadowland, creates incredibly realistic shapes and forms, and out of the light comes a touching story that inspires exploration of the world around us and viewing the ordinary in a different light.

This transformation from troupe to iconic objects is seamless and set to a soaring soundtrack.

Shadowland is Pilobolus' first full-evening work and this is their first time in Australia. The acclaimed dance troupe, hailing from the US, will be taking this unique and spectacular shadow theatre and dance performance to Melbourne, Auckland, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Adelaide.

Opening at Arts Centre Melbourne's State Theatre in Melbourne on Wednesday 28 May, Shadowland tells the tale of a teenage girl yearning for independence who, finding herself trapped in Shadowland, explores the depths of this land of shadows.

The troupe will be taking its dynamic performance across Australia:
Melbourne from Wednesday 28 May to Sunday 1 June (Arts Centre Melbourne)
Auckland from Tuesday 3 June to Sunday 8 June (Auckland Civic Theatre)
Brisbane from Tuesday 10 June to Sunday 15 June (QPAC – The Playhouse)
Sydney from Tuesday 17 June to Friday 20 June (The State Theatre)
Canberra from Saturday 21 June to Sunday 22 June (The Canberra Theatre)
Perth from Wednesday 25 June to Sunday 6 July (The Regal Theatre); and
Adelaide from Wednesday 9 July to Sunday 13 July (Her Majesties Theatre.

Michael Tray, the productions executive director, speaks of the production with pride, and proud he should be. What these men and women can do with a sheet and some light is nothing short of amazing.

Fun and unforgettable, Shadowland is not to be missed.
