If you have never been interested in deceased estate auctions, then you might still care to know about this one. It is the effects of the late, great Bob Hawke and some belonging to his wife Blanche d'Alpuget, who is very much alive.
Just before his death, the couple sold their Northbridge mansion with its incredible views over Middle Harbour in a private sale for a purported $15 million dollars. Those who wish to see a preview of this auction can go along to this estate to see what is on offer Entrance is by catalogue only, and it will be $5 to purchase the catalogue.
While you will probably be staring out at the million-dollar views, you will also see the artworks, diplomatic gifts, mementoes and designer furniture that is expected to total more than $250,000 at auction. The mementoes will be on view for two days on the weekend of August 24 and 25 before being moved to the Paddington RSL for the auction on Tuesday 27 August 2019 at 6:00 pm.
There will be the famous painting 'The Drover's Wife' by artist Hugh Sawrey and works of art by Thomas McAuley, and Leanne Wanjidari. There are Persian rugs and white Italian designer leather furniture by Paolo Piva. Somehow I feel Bob let Blanche do the furniture buying.

There are gifts from foreign dignitaries such as a silver bowl inscribed "Presented by Dick Cheney Secretary of Defence, United States of America."

You will also see Chinese vases, porcelain tea services, cigar boxes, a Versace ashtray and Bob's gold-plated cigar cutter. There is even a crystal photo frame with a photo of Hawke and d'Alpuget with fellow former prime minister Kevin Rudd and his wife Therese Rein.
Bob Hawke loved his sport so expect sporting memorabilia such as Hawke's set of Big Bertha Callaway golf clubs, a framed photo of Don Bradman signed by Bradman and a framed photo of Hawke playing tennis.
Some of the expected prices at the auction sound quite reasonable. Although I did wonder at some items such as a set of Encyclopedia Britannica that even op shops no longer sell. But let's see what happens. A lot of Australians would like a piece of Bob Hawke in one way or another.
Those who admired him, and many people did, would love to have something of his as a talking point in their homes and to hand down a part of history to future generations.
