Sometimes, the heart yearns for more than the average, run of the mill George Street night club. Team this yearning with a little bit of alcohol and an old school punk haircut and before you know it you're at the doorsteps of St James Hotel, surrounded by all the indie kids Sydney has to offer. Flash a smile at the security guards, who themselves are somewhat illustrious amongst the regular club attendees. Whether you dress up or dress down, it doesn't matter; SFX caters for everyone and anyone. With more promoters than patrons, it's almost effortless to drop a name at the door and save yourself a few dollars on the entry fee.

There is something so winning about a club that plays punk, top 40's and live music all at the same time. Before you know it, it's 3 am and you've missed the last bus home. When your boss asks why there's still a black stamp on your arm, barely smudged despite last night's activities, you shake your head convincingly and reply that you don't know how it got there, and you most definitely are ready to tackle that nine hour shift.

As far as service goes, the staff are forthcoming and hospitable, the endearing bartenders are always ready to lend a smile (or even better, a wink) and even the bouncers have built rapport with the guests. Drinks are comparatively cheap and the bar staff are more than happy to mix and match different drinks, unlike some bars where that kind of request is met with an icy glare and a loud sniff.

SFX also has themed nights, where dressing in an outlandish costume earns you definite cool points and every so often, relatively cheaper entry. Sure, you may be met with the likely glares from random strangers as you strut confidently across Castlereagh Street, but it's all worth it once you're inside. Dance amongst leather clad, tattoo bearing boys and girls or choose to dance alone; whatever the case, you'll be having a hell of a good time. A friend of mine once partied so hard at SFX that he ripped a huge hole in his jeans, which if you think about it, is quite an admirable feat. Needless to say, he had an awesome night.

Whether you leave covered in bruises or with someone else's jacket, you're bound to leave contented. Next time you find yourself numbly bopping away to the standard tracks played at every single club, paying for ridiculously overpriced drinks, take a chance on SFX.
