Sewing is the New Black; Fun & Satisfying
With the popularity of shows like Project Runway there's a keen interest in learning how to make your own fashion and handmade items.

I've always been interested in sewing with a sewing machine so when I saw an Absolute Beginner's class offered at Make and Learn I decided it was the perfect time to try my life long dream of sewing.

The class is conveniently located in Kingsford in the Eastern suburbs. The studio space is well lit, airy and very practical, full of sewing machine stations so each student had their own space. You can choose to bring your own sewing machine or use one of theirs free of charge.

Natascha was our teacher for the day. She was an excellent sewing teacher. Her instructions were very clear and helpful and her patience was infinite with a room full of newbies at the sewing machine.

The class size was small, so each student got individualised expert attention.

Natascha had us each introduce ourselves and what we did, and why we would like to study sewing. It was a great way to warm up the group, and we all had fun chatting through the day.

She explained what we would be creating for the day, a drawstring bag, a pincushion and a zippered purse. There were many fun and beautiful fabrics to choose from, which made it really enjoyable creating our handmade items.

Tea and biscuits were also generously provided which helped keep us motivated throughout the day of sewing.

I was really amazed at what I was able to learn in one day. There truly is something satisfying that we've lost in modern society in being able to create something you make yourself.

I couldn't believe I was able to create a zippered purse and a button hole to pull the drawstrings through. It was really much easier than I thought it would be to use the sewing machine. I think most of the students in the room picked up the skills with relative ease.

I also liked Natascha's suggestion to keep a folder of pictures for inspiration. I could visualise myself making pillows, bags, stuffed animals, skirts even.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to sewing.
By the end of the day I felt a sense of accomplishment having created three unique handmade items that I could carry around.

Natascha is the founder of Make and Learn and is eager to share her passion for sewing and creating with her students. Natascha says, "Ever since I was a little girl I loved to create things with my hands."

Natascha explained that after coming to Australia she didn't sew for a few years until my mother in law surprised her with a sewing machine for an engagement present. She fell back in love with sewing.

"When my son was born, I decided I wanted to study fashion design as I was interested in industrial construction techniques and pattern drafting, so I enrolled at TAFE. Initially, this was really only for personal interest as I already have a degree in Health Sciences and am a qualified naturopath, but I had people ask if I could do private lessons and soon small group classes followed. It was such fun introducing students to their new favourite hobby.

Seeing a sense of pride reflect in their faces as they master a new technique and make something from scratch. I absolutely love the challenge of breaking down complex processes into simple steps and I like to prepare my classes meticulously so that students can get the most out of their time with me."

The class schedule is from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM with a short break for lunch. (BYO sandwich) I would also suggest bringing some snacks if you get hungry, there were biscuits provided, but I like eating savoury snacks as well.

All in all, it was a very satisfying day and the good news is, once you've mastered the Beginner's class there are Intermediate and Advanced classes as well as Hen's Events and Baby Shower's and sewing classes for kids and teens. Go here to see the full range of what Make and Learn offers.
