I'm a backstage person. Not in a Goffman sense, in a literal sense. I don't like to be onstage, I'm not a huge fan of photos and I don't even wear makeup very often. But last weekend I grabbed a friend and stepped out of my comfort zone and into the spotlight. This is my story of my SevenOne Studios Two-hour Glamour Photo Shoot!
SevenOne Studios welcomed us with champagne and chocolates, and then we settled in for hair and makeup. They were friendly and thorough, checking with us what we liked and disliked, and I actually enjoyed sitting there chatting while the makeup artist Astrid applied layers of purple – yes, purple – eyeshadow and amazingly soft false eyelashes to my eyelids. I then had my hair straightened and styled, and we were finally ready for the studio.

Being new (read: nonexistent) in the amateur modelling scene I had no idea what I was in for, but our photographer explained everything and helped us with poses and clothing choices. While I felt a bit silly trying to remember to keep my chin down and my shoulders back and my leg straight and my fingers soft and to smile AND to make it all look carefree and natural, somehow the photos came out great!
We tried a variety of poses, backdrops, lighting and props to make sure there was a good mix. After the shoot my friend and I had another (or was it the third?!) glass of champagne and settled into the viewing room to appreciate how fantastically good looking we are. We went through the photos slowly, gradually discarding some, and ended up with a small set of the best. I can't wait until they arrive in the mail.
SevenOne Studios offer portraits, family shoots, wedding photos and glamour. While I won't be rushing back too soon, I did love the experience. They're located at 21 Lincoln Street Richmond. It's very expensive, but try LivingSocial for up to 97% off.
