Think of an elephant up in a tree, think of a person too tiny to see! Think of a bird with a one-feather tail, going on adventures down a dangerous trail… This April, Balaklava Community Arts will bring your imagination to life with their presentation of the whimsical and entertaining musical, Seussical.

Seussical is a musical by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, where characters from the books of Dr. Seuss come to life and stories intertwine. The Cat in the Hat, is your host and MC, guiding the story following Horton The Elephant and his endeavours to protect the people of Who-ville, who live on a tiny speck of dust. On his journey, Horton comes across classic Dr Seuss characters including Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie LaBird and the Sour Kangaroo with favourite songs and scenes from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax and Green Eggs and Ham.

Balaklava Community Arts (BCA) president and director of the show, Kelly Bickle is excited about bringing the show to the Balaklava stage, reminiscing "Many of us grew up with Dr Seuss' books. Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who. Seussical has taken all these favourites and mashed them into a Musical which is bright and colourful with catchy songs. You have your lovable characters, and those you want to 'boo' at, and as with any good show it has a happy ending".

Evening performances, held during the first two weekends of April, are presented in a cabaret style providing a unique opportunity for a social occasion and a show. "We have found many of our audience members prefer the more relaxed style of a cabaret performance. Being able to join friends and family around a table of food and enjoying drinks throughout the show adds to the fun. And when people are more relaxed they tend to become more involved in the show" says Kelly.

Formed in 1945 the Balaklava Choral and Music Lovers' Society was reformed to become the Balaklava Community Arts (BCA) Incorporated in 1982. The aim of BCA is "Promoting the Arts to the Wider Community", as well as fostering the talents of people of all ages. From 1982 - 2016 BCA has staged over 48 productions including full-scale musicals, pantomimes, plays, operettas, variety concerts, dinner theatre, 'Royal Nativity' and outdoor market evenings and musical comedies. In 1997 BCA assisted with the development of the Balaklava Eisteddfod , which will celebrate its 20 year this year.

BCA has contributed to many local community organisations, donating profits from many of its performances to local community groups, such as the Balaklava and District War Memorial Hospital, Child Care Centre, Ambulance, Scouts, Swimming Pool, Shamus Liptrot Cycling Trail and many others. Kelly notes "We have many new faces to BCA this year, which is encouraging to see. Balaklava Community Arts has built up a wonderful reputation for producing quality performance in the rural township of Balaklava. We work to support our community, and in turn our community supports us. We look forward to more exciting productions in the future."

Opened in 1881, the heritage listed Balaklava Town Hall has a long and impressive history as a hall, library, film theatre and performance space. Incremental updates over time have included the addition of dressing rooms, green room and equipment to develop a terrific performance space for performers and audiences alike. "Balaklava has been fortunate to have some extremely talented people who have, and continue to foster the Arts, creating a wonderful performance venue with quality sound and lighting, and enthusiastic cast and orchestra members willing to travel to be in our shows" says Kelly. "Not only that, you'll get old country hospitality when you arrive. A trip to Balaklava for one of our productions is well worth it!"
