Oh the thinks you will think
This October, Northern Light Theatre Company present the Seussical, the musical bringing your favourite Dr Seuss characters to life on stage at the Shedley Theatre. Opening 12 October, 2018 with eight performances from October 12 to 20, The Cat in the Hat will guide audiences in a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza.
The story of Seussical is based on the stories of Horton Hears a Who and Horton Sits on an Egg, but it isn't just a few stories set to music: it's a full-length book musical that weaves together more than 15 of Dr Seuss' most beloved books and characters. The messages at the heart of the books are integrated throughout the story—the power of helping a friend, of not giving up, of keeping a promise, of valuing the dignity of others, and a pure belief in the power of imagination.
Narrated by The Cat in the Hat the story follows Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust that contains the Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge: not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left in his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphantly.
Playing the fun and imaginative role of Jojo, Sam Stringer has been performing since the age of 4. Anticipating what audiences will love about the show, Sam says that "audiences will love the catchy songs and the bright and colourful set and costumes. Most of all, they will enjoy the energy and enthusiasm brought to the show by the performances of all the cast".
Andrew Hawkins plays the quirky Mayor of Whoville, bringing a lifetime of international experience to the Shedley stage in Seussical. A seasoned all-rounder, Andrew has spent much if his recent time in the director's chair and is enjoying being back on stage. On the experience of performing in Seussical, Andrew says "My favourite shows are shows that rely on a strong ensemble cast, so I feel so fortunate that I get to perform in one and with such a talented bunch of people! Watching my fellow actors smash out their solos and bring the wonderful vibrant Dr Seuss characters to life on stage, gives me a real joy and I feel so privileged to be performing alongside them".
Co-conceived by Eric Idle with book, music and lyrics by Tony Awards winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Lucky Stiff, My Favorite Year, Once on This Island, Ragtime), Seussical lovingly brings your favourite Dr. Seuss characters to life, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. The colourful characters transport you all the way from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

Thaward-winningam and a talented and award winning cast including David Salter, Amy Nagesh (nee Hutchinson), Sebastian Cooper and Sam Stringer.
