Ever since I was 7-years-old, I knew I wanted to be a writer and made my own Mr Men books. Today, I am a freelance writer and have the privilege to review bands, theatre and comedy across Melbourne, not to mention interview some incredible artists.

Experience a little bit of Morocco in Nairobi
I recently visited Serenity Spa in Gigiri and was thrilled to return to the luxurious day spa for a Hamman. As stated previously, the spa is tranquil and the overall layout lends itself perfectly to relaxation and an all-encompassing pampering for both your body and soul. I was lucky to meet the owner Petra on this occasion who wants to give clients a holistic approach to health and beauty." We also do detox which makes this more a wellness establishment and not just a spa. It's about feeling good internally and detoxifying your body," says Petra.

The spas vision statement is, "To be a world class spa and holistic healing centre that provides premier wellness services, experience & education to its clients globally".

"The whole detox package has been created by a German nutritionist (Heike Niemeier) who has been very successful in Europe," says Petra.

The fitness and health nutritionist who has been in the industry since 1992, spent a week at Serenity Spa training staff. The spa offers intermittent detox packages, as well as 3 and 7-day package whereby you can opt to have your detox program delivered to your door. The detox program helps to eliminate toxics that have accumulated overtime and can help combat fatigue, sluggishness, autoimmune diseases among many other ailments.

"I started the spa as I wanted to give myself a break (from previous position with AccessKenya) and I was looking for spas and I couldn't find anything and that's how Serenity started. It's been a fun journey and I'm really enjoying it," says Petra.

Hammam Relaxation Room

Serenity Spa opened its doors in April 2013 and has expanded from 7 to 14 rooms. One of the spas newest additions is the offering of Hammams. The Hammam which is a weekly ritual for many in Morocco, lasts approximately 90 minutes from start to end. I was met by my therapist Cate at reception where I was offered a refreshment and refresher towel and escorted upstairs to the Hammam room. The room consists of a steam room and massage area. The Hammam began with a 20-minute steam followed by the application of black soap (Savon Noir), which is known for its therapeutic properties. After my therapist washed off the black soap, I spent another 10 minutes in the steam room, followed by exfoliation which was applied with a Kessa Glove. The exfoliation treatment left my skin feeling smooth and extremely clean. After some more time in the the steam, my therapist retuned to apply the Moroccan Clay mask which helps to detoxify the body. The main benefit of steam is the production of sweat which helps to eliminate toxins from the body. The Hammam is both a mind and body treatment and draws on ancient middle eastern practices which dates back to the 1500's. In countries like Morocco and Turkey, these practices are seen as rituals passed down to future generations. At the end of the treatment, I showered off and had the opportunity to wash and dry my hair in the private room.

My therapist Cate was highly professional and continually checked on me throughout the procedure. Once I had finished drying my hair and changed, I was escorted out to the garden where I sipped on Green Tea and was offered fruit skewers. It was yet another remarkable experience at Serenity Spa, made even more memorable by incredibly attentive staff.
