Your heart's racing, you're handcuffed and blindfolded in a dark room and a deep voice tells you the game's about to begin. No it's not a Fifty Shades of Grey LARP (Live Action Role Play). It's the thrilling beginning to one of South East Queensland's most exciting escape rooms, Executioner's Toolshed.

It's one of two fun challenges run by at Redbank Plains. Their other room, Enchanted Forest is far friendlier to the faint of heart and people of all ages. It also has easier puzzles and clues along the way.

The Executioner's Toolshed, however, is for those made of sterner stuff! The experience starts with a warm welcome from your hosts and an overview of the rules of the game. You and your friends need to find a series of clues, puzzles and riddles which you solve to open doors, locks and ultimately escape within one hour. If you get really stuck, you can get a clue from the hosts to help keep you moving along.

really are a puzzle-solver's delight. The riddles and clues are clever, but not so clever that you've no hope of solving them. You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to work them out, even in the 'difficult' level game. Like many escape rooms, the overarching scenario is very engaging and adds a nice element of role play and drama.

Right from the moment of the eerie executioner's voiceover at the start, my friends and I became fully immersed in the reality. Each new section and room was decorated really effectively to make you feel like you were in a horror movie. We even had fun acting out some horror movie tropes along the way. "Let's split up to search for clues, what could possibly go wrong?""Take this if you want to live." "What devilish clue has the executioner got in store for us this time?""Oh no, ten minutes left. We're not going to make it out of here on time.""He's coming! HE'S COMING!!!"

A little advice – you will need to put as much, if not more effort into finding the clues as solving them, so search every space as thoroughly as possible. You won't need to break anything or move heavy furniture, but you do need to search every nook and cranny.

The only times we had to ask for clues from the hosts were when we had inadvertently missed finding a piece we needed for a puzzle. Once we had all the pieces we were able to solve all of the clues.

The other piece of advice the hosts mentioned was to be sure to actually ask for clues when you need them. You'll have more fun and be more likely to succeed in beating the clock.

Handy skills and traits to bring to :

Clear communicationKeen observationBasic mathRiddle solvingJigsaw puzzle skillsTeamworkNerves of steelAn imagination

would be a really good idea for a team bonding session or a corporate challenge. Escaping the Executioner's Toolshed sure beats trust falls and motivational speakers.

The kids don't have to miss out either. Enchanted Forest makes for a fun family friendly experience that entertains everyone from toddlers to adults. That room uses child-friendly themes and challenges for the adults to have you work together to save three trapped fairies. It's sure to fire those little imaginations!

You don't need to bring a thing to . There's free on-site parking, water and bathrooms provided. It's a good idea to wear comfortable casual clothing. Don't worry if there is an emergency or you need the bathroom during play. You can actually leave the rooms at any time, but the clock will keep ticking if you pop out for a break.

The rooms can be solved by one to six people at a time. We went as a triple date and I have to say it was the best group date night I've ever had. It makes dinner and a movie seem so mundane. Afterwards, we were all laughing and reminiscing about the fun we had and said we would definitely do an escape room again.
