WHEATBELT photographer Peter G. Smith's passion for photography has resulted in his first-ever exhibition being staged at The York Mill's Boiler Room Gallery this September.

Titled Wheatbelt Fury, it's a collection of images of lightning storms across the land.

"I have always loved watching lightning storms and, on the odd occasion, photographing them," Smith said.

"Since moving to the Wheatbelt – and with the frequency of lightning storms in the region – I took to watching the weather radar daily during the summer storm seasons and loaded my camera kit in the car every morning, just in case.

"I've chased many storms hundreds of kilometres and put myself in some very dangerous situations to get that special one-in-a-million shot."

Smith's passion for photography started in the early 1970s when, as a young boy, he looked forward to joining his father in a makeshift dark room (his mother's kitchen).

From those early beginnings, the camera became something Smith always had at hand.

"We were very lucky growing up because our parents enjoyed camping and exploring outback WA," he said. "It was perfect for a kid growing up with a passion for photography.

"Natural landscape photography became my niche – I love the desert country."

Making a decision to become professional 10 years ago, Smith has built a customer base through the Perth Hills and Wheatbelt, also generating sales of his photographic art through his website.

"I'm very excited about my first exhibition with the beauty, anger and fury of Mother Nature at its best, all captured in these photographic images," he said.

The York Mill Managing Director John Langton added: "This is the first exhibition by Peter G. Smith and the first photographic display to be held in the Boiler Room Gallery.

"We are delighted Peter is working closely with us on this and other exciting new projects."

One of these includes Ballet In The Bush, which Smith plans to exhibit at The York Mill.

Wheatbelt Fury runs until September 30 in the Boiler Room Gallery. Admission is free.

The York Mill is at 10 Henrietta Street, York, and the gallery is open 10am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday. For more details, call 9641 2900 or go to www.theyorkmill.com.au.
