Explore Melbourne with your kids these school holidays.

It's time to get out and about for the Spring school holidays. Here are 5 events around Melbourne for the kids to enjoy, which won't break the bank balance:

Melbourne Immigration Museum
The Immigration Museum has a number of self-guided activities set up for children this school holidays including:

Make a Customs Identification Badge
Children can make their own Customs Identification Badge before setting off on The Customs Detective Trail.

Create a Disguise Kit
Children can create their own customs detective disguise kit while learning about Australia's 'Sherlock Holmes' Customs Detective-Inspector John Christie.

The Customs Detective Trail
Children can follow a detective trail through the museum, spotting clues and solving puzzles, to reveal the story of Old Customs House.

All children need to be accompanied by an adult. Entry and activities are free for children and concession cardholders. Adults cost $10. The Immigration Museum is open from 10am 5pm daily.


Kids in the Studio

Kids will have the opportunity use their artistic flair by experimenting and creating weird and wonderful mechanical toys, wacky gadgets or kooky contraptions. This activity is inspired by the kinetic creations of Ian Burns and is free activity. Kids can drop into the ACMI Lightwell between 11am-3pm on weekdays during the school holidays to take part. There is no need to book.

The State Library of Victoria

Make a Book
Take your children to visit the Gusto! Exhibition at The State Library then take them to create their own recipe book.

Sessions where children can make their own recipe book at the following times:

Thursday 27 September 2012, 10:30am - 12:00pm
Friday 28 September 2012, 10:30am - 12:00pm
Monday 1 October 2012, 10:30am - 12:00pm
Tuesday 2 October 2012, 10:30am - 12:00pm

Create your own recipe book @ the State Library.

Royal Botanic Gardens

Papermaking for Kids
Children have the opportunity to learn the art of papermaking and take home the result. Workshops will be held on Tuesday the 25th of September and Wednesday the 26th of September between 10.30am 12 noon 
1pm 2.30pm at Plant Craft Cottage. The cost is $12 per child, which includes instruction and all materials. Children are encouraged to bring a towel and a waterproof apron or art smock. Bookings can be made by calling Phyl on 9885 7293.

Craft Activities
It's time to get crafty at the QVM's free school holiday craft workshops. Children will have the opportunity to create door hangings, pencil holders, tea lights, tea light candle holders & frames. Classes will be held at 10am & 11am on Tuesday 25th September, Thursday 27th September & Friday 28th September. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning 03 9320 5822.

Head along to the free Craft Workshops @ QVM.
