The Sense of an Ending is directed by Ritesh Batra and written by Nick Payne. The movie is based on the book The Sense of an Ending, by Julian Barnes.
The Sense of an Ending is about memories, repression of memories, responsibilities, suicide and troubled love.
Tony Webster is a retired gentleman and inside his small shop, he fixes and sells secondhand Leica photographic machines. One morning, he receives a letter from Sarah Ford, the mother of Veronica, his girlfriend at the University times. Sarah has left Tony some money and the diary of Adrian Finn. Tony is then forced to remember his relationship with Veronica, his friend Adrian, and his own responsibilities.
The movie goes into many flashbacks to tell the story of all the people involved. The flashbacks are based on Tony Webster's memories that are not so reliable and full of omission and repressed parts.
Tony Webster is the narrator of his own story in the movie. In particular ,he meets often with his ex-wife to recount his old memories that he has long forgotten. He is trying to understand why Sarah left to him the diary and how to get the diary.
When Tony was a young student at the university, he meets the beautiful but mysterious Veronica. They are in love but at a certain point, Veronica seems in love with Tony's best friend, Adrian Finn.
Veronica's mother seems to play an important role in Tony's past life but Tony seems not wanted to remember all the real details. Tony is forced to remember his relationship with Veronica, his friend Adrian and his own responsibilities. Tony realises his life, Veronica's life and Adrian's life are entwined.
The movie analyses the meaning of time and memories. The memories are fluid and with time they change or they get rejected by convenience.
Ritesh Batra is a famous director for the beautiful movie The Lunchbox The movie became famous worldwide and received many awards. The Sense of an Ending is about a divorced gentleman in his sixties that has to play memory after memory in his mind the attempt to remember the past.
The movie A Sense of an Ending has to be narrated through relationships, since the movie is a story of loss and regret. Ritesh Batra has read the book The Sense of an Ending in 2013. Then he had the opportunity to turn the novel into a movie.
