As we made our way down the quiet back streets and turned onto a dirt road, we began to question if we were in the right place. I sometimes think Google maps is playing games with me and I thought it may have lead me astray once again. Then we saw a man in a bright yellow vest ushering us into the carpark which was almost filled up. As we arrived, we noticed a lovely house nestled amongst an array of flowers and rolling mountains.

Admittedly I have never read the famous Jane Austen novels, so I did not know what to expect. My friend had asked if I wanted to accompany her to watch a theatre show and I said yes and didn't really ask more. As we watched the show, it became much more evident as to why the location was chosen for the performance. Blue Sky Theatre have teamed up with SA gardens to present a comedic spin on Jane Austen's novel "Sense and Sensibility" in 3 different garden settings across Victor Harbour, Aldgate and Beaumont.

Based on the novel, this theatre show follows the story of two sisters Marianne and Elinor Dashwood (played by Kate Van Der Horst and Laura Kiil) who find themselves in a rut after they lose their father, and in turn their home, fortune and any future hope for love and marriage. Determined not to lose all hope, the sisters still manage to wind up tangled in a frenzy of love and betrayal.

The small cast meant that multiple characters were played by the same actor, however, this was executed well. The characters really came alive, and were full of enthusiasm, numerous times having the whole audience in fits of laughter.

The setting meant the show really had an authentic feel, particularly when the kookaburras in a tree nearby chimed in and took over the show at a particularly tense moment.

The showing I attended attracted an older audience, however, I really quite enjoyed the show and believe that many people of all ages would enjoy it.

Each showing opens up 1.5 hours prior to the show which allows you to walk around the gardens or enjoy a picnic and a bottle of wine if you wish. You can buy wine by glass or bottle while a picnic basket can be included in your ticket or you can bring your own. It is definitely a lovely relaxing way to spend a summer afternoon.
