Mother's Day is a time to celebrate mothers from all across the world and to take a single day to attempt to thank them for everything they have done. Not an easy feat. Where do you start and what gift could be adequate for such an inspiring and courageous woman?

Don't automatically consider the shopping centre and all the best shops and sales for Mum; what about a gift that's greater than another ornament, pair of slippers, bottle of wine or DVD?
Consider giving Mum the gift of life, healing or sustainability. It is possible and it's as easy as entering a web address and having a debit card handy.

Can you imagine a world without breast cancer? Make a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation in your mother's name, or through the Cancer Council .

Obstetric fistula is a condition no woman should have to face, but many women in third-world countries do every day. Suffering horrific injuries following childbirth, young women need lifesaving surgery to reclaim their dignity, get a second chance and the opportunity to be a mother. Oxfam is a lovely choice for Mum too and there are many options to purchase gifts of vegetables, medicine or clean water for third-world countries. Alternatively you can visit the store in Perth on Hay Street, or Fremantle on Queen Street, for a fair trade gift that you know will benefit the people who produced it.

Is your mother an animal lover? More than 12 million Australian hens are confined to battery cages. Donate to Animals Australia and make a difference.

As winter approaches and the nights become freezing, why not consider buying a backpack swag for the homeless, or a gift voucher towards one through Swags for Homeless ? This is literally a gift which will save lives.

Any of these gifts would be more than your mother could hope for and more than an underprivileged or sick person or suffering animal could ever dream of.

Closer to home, what can you do? You may not have much money but you still have yourself and you can be a wonderful gift as well. Far more important than money is time. Go and spend time with your Mum, make her breakfast in bed, clean her house, cook her a meal or treat her to a day where she doesn't have to do a thing.

There are so many ways to thank Mum for everything she has done and many won't even scrape the surface.

This Mother's Day and every other day, hold your Mum a little closer and make that phone call 'to say hello' more often. She won't be around forever so use this time to embrace and celebrate her.
