Self-defence classes are a great way to get some exercise and learn a useful skill. There are many forms and schools of self-defence, so finding the right one to suit your needs, experience, and abilities is important.


Here are five different places in Sydney that offer self-defence classes.

Daniel Trifu, founder and teacher, has over 25 years experience studying and teaching martial arts, and has won notable competitions such as in the Kyokushin Karate competition, and at National, Asian Pacific, Oceania, and other international tournaments.

Children as young as two have attended this dojo, and it has classes catered to all ages, skill levels, and genders. There are also joint classes for parents and children, so family members can train together. 3. International Wing Chun Academy

This academy is one of the largest martial arts schools in Australia, and its Sydney headquarters are located on Sussex Street.

The classes cater for anyone between the ages of five and 70, regardless of whether they want to learn self-defence or just improve fitness. The Academy was established in South Australia by Grandmaster Jim Fung, who had had over 35 years experience teaching in Australia.

Wing Chun is a branch of martial arts with over 300 years of history, first created by Buddhist nun Ng Mui during the Qing Dynasty. It relies on natural force rather than brute strength, eliminating unnecessary movements for efficient and effective defence. They also offer dedicated classes for children and women.

Sydney Self Defence Centre is led by Chris Futcher-Coles, a Master in Yi Quan and Wuxin Qigong, styles of internal kung fu. He is the Vice President of the Australian Health Qigong Association, and is a Government-accredited Level 2 coach with the Australian Coaching Council.

These classes are centred on the Taoist philosophy of Yin Yang, and how to use this to approach conflict. It offers training for all ages, genders, and skill levels, as well as specially designed workshops for schools. These workshops suit a range of primary and secondary school curriculums as well, including PDHPE, Cross Roads, and Sports.

They also have special workshops for domestic violence survivors, women's self defence, youth and teens, and seniors. Not only do you learn the physical aspects of defence, but also problem solving, conflict resolution, laws, anti-bullying, and basic psychology.

The Krav Maga Defence Institute was founded by Ron Engelman, a former combat instructor in the Israeli Defence Force. It is the largest Krav Maga school in Australia, and staffed by certified instructors, who have trained with Krav Maga instructors from the Israeli army.

Krav Maga focuses on practicality, using everyday items as effective means of self-defence, and how to escape and defend yourself against real life threats. There are different levels of classes offered, as well as sparring, combat fitness, and other workshops. For first-timers, there is a special Induction Class to prepare you for the beginner's classes, which can be repeated as often as you like.
