Featuring Legendary Pieces of Sports Timing History

Seiko Australia proudly announces the launch of the "SEIKO BIRTH & REBIRTH" exhibition, commemorating 100 years since Seiko introduced its first wristwatch with "Seiko" on the dial, marking the beginning of the Seiko brand. Legendary pieces of sports timing history feature in the free exhibition open to the public from Friday, 15th March 2024 to Sunday, 24th March 2024 at Mid City Centre, 420 George Street, Sydney.

The exhibition includes 6 historical watches borrowed from the Seiko Museum Ginza in Tokyo, Japan including the first Seiko branded watch dated 1924, the world’s first quartz watch dated 1969 and the world’s first TV watch, dated 1982 which was worn by James Bond.

There is a section called ‘REBIRTH power design project’ where Seiko designers have designed new concept watches based upon original watches.

Seiko were the official timers of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games and the exhibition features three original stopwatches from the games in the sports timing section. The Seiko stopwatches were tested by the World Athletics Organisation two years before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and they were surprised at the precision. Seiko's innovative "heart-shaped cam" mechanism enabled this stopwatch to precisely time events to 1/100th of a second, a feat previously considered impossible for a mechanical watch. Since the Olympic Games in 1964, Seiko has been the official timer of numerous international events, including world athletics championships.

In 2009 Usain Bolt achieved a new world record of 9.58 seconds in the 100 metres, so Seiko are giving visitors to the exhibition the chance to win a mini Seiko Sports Timer by using their timer to try to record precisely 9.58 seconds.

There is also a display of concept watches that visitors can provide their details and vote on their favourite one, which allows them to try their luck at the Seiko Gacha Machine and win a prize.

The Pop-Up Exhibition is located inside the Mid City Centre which is situated between Pitt Street Mall and George Street. If approaching from the George Street side you will see the Seiko shop on your right as you enter, but the pop-up exhibition is further inside the centre on the left-hand side.
