🌱 What is a seed library?Supported by the
Maleny Seed Library and the
Blackall Range Woodcrafters Guild, the absolutely ingenious Seed Library Program offers collections of seeds, for members of the community, to swap in a sustainable manner. The seeds are from local and heirloom fruit and vegetable varieties that may otherwise be lost, as well as new local varieties, including flowers. The Seed Library Program allows communities to swap, grow and work towards seed sustainability and education within the Sunshine Coast region.
Commencing at the beginning of February, members of the community can enjoy the benefits of seed swapping through the Maleny and Kawana Sunshine Coast Libraries.

🌱 How does one participate in the Seed Library Program?Once a month, library members are welcome to four seed packets per swap, to take home and grow. When the plant has grown and set its own seed, harvest some of these seeds to donate back to the seed library.
Labelled envelopes will be supplied to seed growers to donate the seeds back, including as much information about the seeds as possible, for eg:
Place of collection (what suburb, to identify the desired area to grow)
Conditions of growth i.e. stake, sunlight, water etc.
Participants will need to place the packets of seed into the separate donation box provided in the library. As the donation box works on an honesty system, self-service checkout is not necessary. For more information, please see the friendly library staff.

🌱 Seed library boxesCreated by the volunteer group, the Maleny Seed Library, the seed library will consist of two boxes of seeds for swapping:
One box will be kept at Maleny Library in the hinterland and the second box will be retained at the Kawana Library, ensuring the coastal region will be covered, for a trial period of six months.
Keen growers will be able to collect and/or donate seeds during library hours at these two libraries only.

🌱 Where can participants find the box in the library? To make it easily accessible, seed boxes will be shelved in the
'Adult non-fiction, Gardens and Plants' section.
The
Seed Library Program is an innovative idea for home owners, apartment dwellers, schools, kindies and even retirement homes to get involved with, ensuring a nurturing continuation of working towards seed sustainability and education within the Sunshine Coast region.
🌱 Join the library to collect, plant, grow and swap - it's promising to be plant-some!
