Where to See Kangaroos in the Wild in Perth

Most visitors to Australia think we have kangaroos living in our gardens and walking down our streets! If you have travelled overseas, I'm sure some of you will have been asked if you rode a kangaroo to school! So when you have family or friends visiting from overseas and you need to show them a kangaroo, where do you go?

We all know about the fabulous kangaroo walk-around enclosures at various Perth attractions, i.e. Perth Zoo, Caversham Wildlife Park, Cohunu Koala Park etc. But where are the best places to see kangaroos in the wild in the Perth Metro area?

I have had family and friends visit from overseas and seeing a kangaroo in the wild is high on their list of things to do and see. So here are two places you are 99.9% guaranteed to see some in the wild.

1. Whiteman Park, The Swan Valley



Whiteman Park is almost 4000 hectares and most of this is bushland. So there is always a good chance you will spot a roo here. A fun way to spot them is take the train or the tram from The Village into the bush. We have always seen roos regardless of the time of year or time of day this way. If you are in the park late in the day, just before closing (6pm), then they do venture out of the bush onto the grass that is lush and green from the sprinklers/retic. So pack a picnic dinner and stay later than you normally would and roo spot.

2. The Vines, The Swan Valley



As The Vines suburb surrounds the championship golf course of the same name, the fairways are always lush and green and attract a massive amount of kangaroos. Just a drive around the suburb will give you interaction with many roos, but there are hotspots where they gather. These are at the back of the hotel near the tennis courts along Hermitage Drive, on the driving range off Burgundy Lane and a drive along Chardonnay Drive will almost always give you a kangaroo overdose.

As you enter The Vines along Chateau Place, the pastures on the left also house quite a big roo population. They are fenced in, but still wild. There are also a family of 4 wild emus that live in there too, so keep your eyes peeled for those as a bonus!





Depending on the time of the year, will depend the time of day you are most likely to spot the roos. In the hotter weather, the roos are more visible early morning and later in the evenings when it is cooler. During the cooler months, you will see them any time during the day at the 2 places mentioned.

Do not forget they are wild animals, and despite many of the kangaroos being used to seeing and living around people, they are wild animals and caution should always be a priority.

You could tie the kangaroo hunt in with a day trip to the wonderful Swan Valley and lunch at the many vineyards en route, dine at The Vines Resort & Country Club or at Whiteman Park.

I never tire of seeing a kangaroo, the more I see, the happier it makes me. I love them!
