Even in the dark and dismal days of winter Splash Adelaide continues to entice us to visit our cosy little city. The latest Splash initiative brings some winter warmth and colour to Adelaide in the guise of a unique interactive pop up gallery appearing through the cooler months.
is the brainchild of Adelaide artist and writer David Paul Jobling. It has a dual theme, highlighting the beauty surrounding us in Adelaide, and celebrating the 30th anniversary of the United Nations International Year of Peace in 1986. Despite talk of terrorism we have been blessed with a peaceful life in South Australia in recent decades - something worth remembering.
While traditional artists need to lure their followers away from their normal paths to enjoy the artist's creative collection, the free is coming to a place near you. Jobling is also taking a bold approach of engaging with his audience: while it will be perfectly possible to silently browse his works in the pop up gallery, you have the option of engagement. Enjoy a brief personal poetry reading. Learn from a quick writer's talk. Or join a conversation with the artist - it's your choice.
"A poem is like a little massage for your brain" says Jobling.
The artwork at is presented in fabric, with the textured textiles complementing the imagery. The art is designed to be used, and appears on everyday items like bags, scarves and playing cards. I think the choice of scarves is very sensible for a winter outdoor art gallery - they won't stay on display for long.
One image was inspired by an aerial view of Adelaide, and graphically depicts a city of change. Jobling muses "I was flying in on the coldest morning in Adelaide 2015 from Melbourne. I had seen Kate Ceberano's Anniversary concert and was flying home. Looking out the plane over Adelaide I captured this and was reminded of how much Adelaide is changing, and what an exciting place it is maturing into over the decades".
David is innovative in his work: "Although I started out building puppets and designing I have shifted towards photography in recent times. I'm interested in the way we can capture images of place and time that evoke the feelings we may have with them. Around Adelaide these are peaceful images I'd say, birds, beaches, street scenes…"
Expect to see David's free roving at unexpected locations in Adelaide. The Wunderkammer Gallery and Blue Bird Cafe on Currie Street are two early locations, but the pop up gallery will travel around the city from Light Square to the Victoria Square fountain and between. For the full details of dates, times and locations see the
page .
With a thirty year career as a visual artist, performer and writer, David Paul Jobling has developed a rich lode of experience. From his early days writing the play "Onkaparinga River" which toured around NSW and SA, David has progressed to explore the themes of conservation and communication.
