Deja Vu (And Other Forms of Knowing) at Melbourne Fringe Festival 2016 - Review

Have I been here before? Why does this place seem hauntingly familiar? Is my mind playing tricks? Am I dreaming? Have I died?

These are some of the provocations Andi Snelling presents in her new show Déjà Vu(And Other Forms of Knowing) on now at Arts House at the Melbourne Fringe Festival until 23 September. Book your tickets here

A black mass surfaces from the darkness and a dark gothic figure rises like a Phoenix in a moment of rebirth. She is contorted, anxious and afraid.

This character examines and records observations of the environment and of the audience. Sometimes it's a fact finding mission to research and understand what happened, whether it really happened and why it's happening again. That's the cycle of Déjà Vu.

Andi Snelling is spellbinding as she dives into the ambiguity of experience and re-experience and guides the audience into known and unknown worlds of subconscious memory. Through physical theatre she articulates the experience of revisiting and reliving a series of events and moments; from the trauma of a bicycle accident to the rediscovery of childhood memories of love and happiness. There are moments of suspending time, limbo, catharsis, reincarnation and reimagining.

Andi Snelling is a master chameleon of movement, a physical provocateur, who raises questions of experience improvised through dance and articulation of emotional and spiritual aspects of the stages and life moments. The performance production aesthetics reveal the strong artistic powerhouse of Danielle Cresp (Director), Jessica To (Co-Producer), Victoria Haslam (Design) and Caleb Garfinkel (Sound Design).

Make sure you see this show, before time lapses into another subconscious memory.
