Most big Australian cities have a Chinatown or a Little Italy. But Sydney has a Thaitown, a concentration of Thai businesses. Thai Town is a neighbourhood in Sydney's central business district and is located in Haymarket on Campbell Street, to the east of George Street, close to Central railway station.
It is the second largest of its kind in the world. Second in size only to Thai Town, in Los Angeles.
Thai Town has been an official area since 2013 when it was officially recognised by the City of Sydney and given signage.
Sydney’s Thaitown is full of secrets and excellent restaurants, and on this tour, you get to see and taste a bit of everything!
You get to sample a range of street foods and snacks from some of Thaitown’s best restaurants, with eight food samples included, ranging from street foods, delicious noodle dishes, Thai fruits and desserts.
Along the way, you’ll learn about Thai cuisine and Thailand’s influence on world cuisine, with “pub trivia” style games that keep the tour interactive and fun.
All samples represent different parts of Thailand that are explained during the tour. You'll also get to try some of the most popular sweets and treats.
Dishes like fish and beef ball skewers with a piquant sauce, aromatic Northern Thai egg noodle curry with chicken known as khao soi at Show Neua; chicken, squid and holy basil sandwich, and pandan custard toast.
You also drop in at Thaitown’s first grocer Pontip Thai Market which opened more than 30 years ago. Vegetarians, vegans and guests with other dietary requirements are more than welcome – just let the organisers know in advance. At the end of the tour, you’ll receive a great guide to Thaitown, covering all the best restaurants and what to order.
The tour goes for 2.5 hours and as well as all the food samples photos will be shared after the tour. As well as a guide to Thaitown with the best recommendations. The tour would be perfect for solo travellers couples, small groups and families. You’ll be in a fun and friendly group consisting of locals and visitors. Locals may wonder about taking a tour of their own city but believe me you will learn heaps and find some great new places to return to.
Group size: Up to 12 people (no minimum numbers).
Age range: This tour is great for all ages, including children. Given the types of food sampled (including some spicy food), we recommend it for children aged 8 and above.
Start location: The tour meets outside the Starbucks on the corner of George and Campbell Streets, near the sign that says “Thaitown". The end location is 100 metres from where you started, a short walk to Central train station.
Accessibility: This tour is wheelchair-friendly and accessible for guests with vision impairments. The route only covers 1 km but is flat, with no stairs or inclines. The total walking time is approximately 20 minutes, so there are plenty of stops for eating!
