For ladies who lunch and want to choose a particular charity to support, CharityDOs.com.au is your starting point. Amanda and Peter Spink launched their company in 2013 to help fundraising organisations to list their events and make it easy to buy tickets for events around Australia.
I found out about The Second Chance organisation and wanted to help in a small way to their very worthwhile efforts. For over 10 years a dedicated team of women have found safe and secure homes for over 1,000 women who are homeless, many of whom are victims of domestic violence.
Over 48,000 women sleep on the streets every night in Australia, a sobering thought. During the year, fundraising events with a difference are held in Brisbane, including a luncheon at Baguette restaurant on Racecourse Rd. Ascot. On arrival champagne was served, followed by a three course lunch of excellent quality, served with a glass of wine.
The highlight of the event was the guest speaker Kate Grenville, who is best known for her book 'The Secret River'. She gave some highlights from her latest novel 'One Life: My Mother's Story'. Her mother Nance Gee was born in 1912 and lived through most of the 20th C. It is a deeply moving account of life on the northern beaches of New South Wales. In 1946 she opened a business, a time when life was beginning to come alive again after WW11. Kate said writing about her mother was like 'drinking your own bath water'. Many can relate to stories of women of that era who had to defy tradition and get on with life.
