See the seahorses
At Beauty Point, near Launceston, is the brilliant tourist attraction - Seahorse World and the Southern Ocean Aquarium.

Seahorses in the wild are seriously under threat. There are approximately 20 million seahorses taken from the seas each year - most of them are used in traditional Chinese medicines. The destruction of their natural habitats also has a big impact on seahorse numbers.

Seahorse World are one of only a few seahorse farms in the world that are allowed to breed and export seahorses. They breed them under a permit issued by Environment Australia and the live trade between countries is regulated by the United Nations Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Seahorses from Tasmania make their way to the USA, Canada, The Netherlands, Italy, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Singapore, China and Korea and are also sold to some of the worlds largest aquariums in Florida, Monterey Bay California, Chicago, Dorset UK, Melbourne, Sydney, Bangkok and Shanghai.

The guided tour takes you on a fascinating and informative tour of the working seahorse farm. It's a unique tour and totally absorbing. The farm is high-tech and you'll see thousands upon thousands of seahorses in varying ages; from birth to adulthood.

The tour travels through The Cave of the Seahorse, working Seahorse Farm and the Wonders of the Southern Ocean Aquarium and ends with the unforgettable experience of holding a beautiful seahorse in the palm of your hand!

To be honest, I went into Seahorse World expecting to walk around and see a few tanks filled with seahorses. It was so very different to what I had expected and we found it incredibly hard to leave. There was so much to see. In fact, we couldn't leave and asked to go through again! The staff were terrific - I have a feeling that there are other visitors who do this too. We were there for hours.

My friend and I purchased the double visit pass to both Seahorse World and the Platypus House. It was a windy, cold and blustery day and it turned out to be the perfect place for us to be during that weather - both sites are indoors and totally protected from the weather.

I would definitely make a return visit to Beauty Point to see the seahorses and the aquariums and can highly recommend Seahorse World to visitors of all ages - this place will keep all members of the family interested and engaged.

Purchasing the double pass to Seahorse World and Platypus House is also recommended. We found that the duo ticket was excellent value for money and we thoroughly enjoyed both places. Be sure to allow enough time to visit both. I think if you miss either one of these fantastic attractions, you'll regret it later. If you're undecided, my advice is to just do it!
