Join the brilliant minds at Ocean Connect for a day of citizen science that'll have you feeling like a marine superhero. We're heading out to check on Gold Coast's seagrass meadows, which, by the way, are not just a nice green snack for sea turtles. These underwater gardens are crucial for keeping our coastal ecosystems humming along smoothly, providing homes for fish, helping to combat coastal erosion, and even acting like tiny factories for sequestering carbon dioxide. There are seven different species doing their thing in the Gold Coast area, covering about 22% of the Broadwater—good news for our aquatic friends and bad news for any aspiring beachfront real estate developers.
But here's the catch: we need your keen eyes to help us monitor these meadows so we can tackle any losses head-on. Not to mention, looking after our seagrasses means cleaner water for everyone, better recreational fishing fun, and a boost for marine tourism. Plus, you'll be set up with a solid understanding of seagrass ecology and threats after our quick training session. This gig is family-friendly, so if you've got kids under 18, you'll have to keep an eye on them. Remember, it's all happening outdoors, so put on your comfiest reef shoes, grab some water and sunscreen, and get ready to doughnut for science. Just don't forget to register since space is tighter than a clam with a pearl. You'll need to come with proper footwear or else consider yourself fish food for the day. Getting there might require some travel planning, so think about public transport or give the EasyPark app a whirl for any parking woes.
