Every year Seafire lights up the beach at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast. This is not your average fireworks show, but a competition where multiple teams from different countries demonstrate their artistic expression through exploding fireworks. So on May 31, get to the Surfers Paradise beach by sunset to enjoy the experience.

Watching Seafire on the Gold Coast

The best place to watch the fireworks is on the beach at Surfers Paradise. Bringing a towel or blanket to sit on is recommended, though you could find vantage points along the boardwalk or even book a hotel room with a view if you want to spend big. As it is that time of year and you have the sea breeze, dress warmly. During the day it is likely to be t-shirt weather, but do bring plenty of warm clothes for the evening, and probably more than you thought you needed to bring.

Rugged up to enjoy Seafire from the beach

While you may be wondering about the exact spot of the fireworks, you just have to look out to sea where you will see barges moored off the beach. That is where the fireworks will be launched from. Unless things are different this year, you don't have to get there too early to find a good spot. With the fireworks out over the ocean, you can view it from anywhere along the beachfront.

The advertised time is from 5 pm to 8 pm, with the exact timetable to be published closer to the date. But think, from sunset onwards. When I attended in the past and looking at last year's photos, you don't really need to go that early to get a decent spot. Given that there are lots of food outlets at Surfers Paradise, it is also pretty easy to grab some food before the event or get some takeaway and eat it on the beach. You can also bring your own food if you prefer.

While not the biggest fireworks event, it is interesting to see each competitor's approach to putting on a fireworks show. Some are very much the standard bombastic music and big bangs, others are more subtle and artistic.

Getting there

If you are going to drive, you probably want to book your parking beforehand, though it is not crazily crowded, parking is going to be limited. You could also find a place to park along the G:link tram line to avoid traffic around the area. You can easily just take the tram, along with various buses to Surfers Paradise. People travelling from Brisbane can take the train and tram. Trains will run all night back to Brisbane as it is a Saturday night.

Staying

It is low season on the Gold Coast, so finding an affordable place to stay at or near Surfers Paradise is not that hard even on the night of the fireworks. Maybe finding a spot with a view of the fireworks would be a challenge though unless you book early and pay big.

Overall

Seafire is something different from the typical fireworks displays, and it isn't over in less than 30 minutes. You also get to compare different fireworks styles. There is usually no need to get there too early, though I can't really guarantee what the crowds will be like this year. So dress warmly, head on down to Surfers Paradise, grab some fish and chips, find a nice spot to sit on the beach, and enjoy the show with your friends.
