The Reef HQ Great Barrier Reef Aquarium is presenting an array of educational and fun events for children this July school holidays. The Sea Turtle Spectacular will be held on Sunday, June 28. The program runs from 10am-12pm and features a wide range of activities that will excite and entertain the kiddies, while engaging them in a special environment that will encourage them to learn and actively participate.

The tropical aquarium will have a jumping castle for the day, the kids can have their faces painted, and there will be plenty of arts and crafts activities to occupy them. As well as raising awareness about the turtle rehabilitation program, Reef HQ is hoping to raise some much-needed money for the Turtle Hospital. Each activity will have a gold coin donation box for you to contribute to, if you wish.

You will be able to get touchy feely with some of the sea creatures with HANDS ON WILDLIFE, there will also be sand art to participate in making, turtle plaster painting, turtle craft activities, a Lucky T Turtle appearance, as well as the Morning Crew CK and Josh from 1063FM broadcasting live from the Aquarium.

You will discover how to identify different species of marine turtles, explore the Turtles Trail and play the Turtle Trivia, or turtle life-cycle game. Craft activities for the kids will include making their own turtle eggs and watching them hatch, or making a turtle facemask. Did somebody say, "Turtle"?

Young ones and adults alike will be delighted to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Perth Mermaids , Cora and Magenta, as they majestically swim underwater in their colourful costumes and tails! The mermaids hail all the way from Perth and have migrated to the East coast for the winter to help raise awareness about the beauty of our ocean habitats and how our help is needed to keep them pristine. They will be at a number of festivals and events throughout Australia this year, and also do birthday parties and charity events.

The whole family can have a tour of the turtle hospital, a facility that provides support and care to sick and injured marine turtles, so they can eventually be rehabilitated and put back into the wild. The program teaches the community about threatened species in the quest to create a shift in attitudes and behavior that will benefit natural conservation and the future of our beloved marine animals.

There have been plenty of success stories from the Turtle Hospital too. Recently, "Ruin" the Green Sea Turtle was released back into her native waters off the shores of Bowen. She had fought her way through "floating syndrome", after her rescue in July last year. She was brought to the Turtle Hospital to complete her rehabilitation and flourished in the good care of the team at Reef HQ.

Treeni the Green Sea Turtle is taking a sabbatical from the wilder waters and is enjoying a stay in the turtle hospital. She was a very slight lady to begin with, but reports say she now has a super-healthy appetite and is recovering quickly.

Myrtle has been with the turtle hospital team since she was just a tiny toddler turtle of two days old. She was found in January wondering aimlessly on a beach, and injured to boot. Since then, she has certainly grown in size and personality. She will be around for a while, as she may have a permanent injury to her eye. Make sure you come and visit Myrtle. It's programs like the Reef HQ Turtle Hospital that are creating happy futures for turtles like Ruin, Treeni and Myrtle, and community support goes a long way in helping too.

As well as guaranteed fun for everyone, there will be a membership special on the day: Purchase your general admission entry $10 for unlimited entry to Reef HQ Aquarium until 1 December 2015.

The Reef HQ Aquarium school holiday program runs from Saturday 27 June to Sunday 12 July, 10am to 12pm daily. It's free with Reef HQ Aquarium general admission or membership, although a gold coin donation is appreciated. Find more details on their website .
