Sea Shepherd Australia Presents 'Defending Antartica: Operation Icefish'

Event:
No rest for the wicked, or heroic

Illegal poaching persists. Relentless exploitation; despite official sanctions & public condemnation. Not even the International Court of Justice extinguishing, as legal loopholes undermine. Whilst poaching is age-old, urgency mounts. More poachers, shrewder tactics (ie altering identities), enabling the further depletion of biodiversity. Populations diminished, ecosystems are endangered. Tracts of unregulated waters, exposing native ocean wildlife.

Don't let that menacing symbolism mislead. Sea Shepherd don't maraud. Nor plunder. Yes, they incorporate direct action. But that doesn't mean cannonballs. Sea Shepherd is a non-profit conservation organization. Purpose-built to counter illegal hunting of marine wildlife. Campaigns, governed by the United Nations World Charter for Nature. Sections 21-24 of it, empowering individuals to enforce conservation laws - particularly, on high seas.

December '02 marked Sea Shepherd Austalia's first expedition. Embarking to thwart whaling fleets near Antarctica. Key objective, enforce the global moratorium on commercial whaling - thus preserving this sanctuary. While the campaign was fruitless, not in vain. Given it paved the way for future endeavours. Current campaign, 'Operation Icefish 2015-16', spawned by an additional nemesis - international syndicate hunting the protected toothfish.

Sufficient surveillance of their six poaching vessels, Operation Icefish 2014-5 launched into action. Pursuing 'Bandit Six - who'd already compromised toothfish populations for a decade. Most notorious of this fleet, 'Thunder', with estimated earnings over $60m. The chase began. Continued. Three oceans, setting a world record. Complicating the situation however, victims of human trafficking onboard, enslaved to these ruthless criminals.

Operation Icefish 2015-16 marks Sea Shepherd's 12th Southern Ocean Defense campaign. One of further direct action against defiant whale poachers, plus Bandit Six's remaining two (now one). Leading direct-action organization of it's type, Sea Shepherd are indispensable. Consistently defending Antarctica's isolated, otherwise invisible ecosystem. Thus fortifying international enforcement agencies. Not targeting offenders. But battling crime rings.

As part of the Sustainable Living Festival, Claire (an onshore volunteer), and Ashkr (part of The MV Sam Simon for Operation Icefish 2014-2015), will share their stories. Hear their accounts, as they describe efforts to protect vulnerable wildlife/habitats. Whilst updating you on current endeavours. Join them, as they reveal their trials, frustrations, successes. In the hope of forging universally cooperative protections. Please see below for details. Cheers.
