Cheap Dumplings and Simply The Best
There are so many incredible hidden Asian restaurants in Sydney that we are really spoilt for choice. This is one of our favorite dumpling restaurants on Pitt Street and it is really worth the effort to come into the city for.
Where to get our dumpling fix?
Sea Bay Restaurant have an unassuming shopfront and could easily be missed. It's a little restaurant that is close to TwoFold and Green Peppercorn Thai Restaurant. I have say upfront, this is not the place for ambience; but all of my previous visits to Sea Bay have exceeded my expectations.
Sea Bay Restaurant on Pitt Street
The restaurants decor is quite basic with plastic chairs and tables. The lighting is glaring and sharp, but the number of diner on a Friday lunch time would make many restaurants envious. All are here for the fresh delicious dumplings.
We have dined here on so many occasions and each time we all come out stuffed and feeling happy. We all collectively agree the food at Sea Bay is simply delicious and the portions are quite substantial.
Dine-In &Takeaway Menu. Cash Only
The food is Northeast Chinese cuisine, with a large selection of dumplings and steamed buns. I must admit, the dumplings are incredible and there are many delicious vegetarian dishes available.
Complementary Chinese Tea
Recently, we organised a fare-well luncheon and after many dining suggestions, Sea Bay was the preferred choice. We were fortunate enough to get a table for 12 during peak lunch time. We were barely seated when complementary teas were offered. Our wait staff was efficient and served our food fairly quickly.
Our 'banquet menu' consisted of dishes like bamboo steamed pork & veg buns, hand fried noodles, assorted dumplings (boiled, steamed and pan fried) and spring pancakes.
Sea Bay's special dumpling condiments
If you like to give your dumplings a bit more kick, dip your dumplings in some chilli vinegar soy sauce. I found myself to be addicted to SeaBay's special chilli paste, the black rice vinegar and the soy sauce. Personally, I believe these mandatory condiments are essential for a pleasant dining experience at Sea Bay.
Fried Eggplant with Special Sauce $14.80
This was my friend's favourite dish. The fried eggplant was very delicious with the special sweet sauce coating. My friend commented that she could finish this plate all by herself, it was that good.
Pork & Veg Fried Dumplings $10.80
Most of my colleagues were hanging out for these popular pan-fried dumplings. Each serve contained 10 juicy plump dumplings with crisp-bottom. They certainly didn't disappoint and the minced pork dumplings were so well-liked, we ordered a second serving.
We just love these crisp-bottomed minced pork dumplings.
Vegetarian Fried Dumplings (pumpkin) $10.80
My vegetarian colleagues also enjoyed their vegetarian fried dumplings. The pumpkin fillings tasted exceedingly sweet.
Pork & Veg Steamed Dumplings x 10pcs $10.80
Our dumpling orders appeared in quick successions. Our plate of steamed dumplings arrived piping hot. The dumpling filling was wrapped with home-made dumpling skin which was soft, moist and smooth. We certainly can taste the flavourful pork and veg filling.
Fried Meat filled buns $10.80
We also like these fried meat-filled buns. They were slightly crunchy at the bottom and the pillowy pastry revealed a delicious pork filling. The pan fried base was golden in colour and that gave a nice crunch. I soaked these meat buns in chilli oil and soy sauce which immediately elevated the flavour.
Steamed Meat Filled Bun $12.80
Next came my favourite dish. I could not wait to savour these steamed meat filled bun (also known as xiao-long bao). They arrived piping hot in two bamboo steamers. There were 10 generous meat buns in each serve.
Unlike Din Tai Fung's well known Michelin Star version, Sea Bay's xiao long bao have thicker skin and tasted a bit doughy and dense. However the meaty filling was juicy and delicious. I found these dumplings to be very moreish, substantial and a lot more economical in value.
Beef Handmade Noodles $15.80
The draw card for Sea Bay Restaurant has to be the handmade noodles. These handmade noodles were delicious with a nice chewy texture. The stir-fry noodles contained beef and assorted vegetables. It was a good hearty dish.
Spring Pancakes $10.80
The arrival of the signature spring pancakes caused some discussions. The pancakes looked delicious with tender braised beef slices, fresh bean sprouts, noodles and special sweet plum sauce. However it was not an ideal dish for sharing among 12 people.
After we spit the bill, it only cost $9.80 per person! The owner even offered us mint chocolates, this must be the best value meal in Sydney CBD.
Happy Comfort Dumpling Meal
Sea Bay Restaurant have a great range that are all well within most budgets. You can always count on a tasty meal here without spending too much. The service is very efficient and they also have a take away menu.
