Pretty much every Melburnian knows about the annual Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show (MIF&GS) and considers it an inspiration and source of knowledge for all things floral, garden and landscaping.

But did you know the MIF&GS also hosts one of the largest outdoor sculpture exhibitions in Australia? This year boasting just over 100 pieces, the sculpture exhibition has been a feature of the MIF&GS for over 20 years. It is a curated exhibition, presented and coordinated by the Association of Sculptors of Victoria .

Curator of the exhibition for seven years, Mark Cowie, is understandably proud of what they have on display. "We have an amazing array of work from a broad range of sculptors - from professionals to those who tinker in their garage at home", said Mark."All works are for sale, with prices ranging from as little as $300 for some small ceramic or bronze pieces, up to $65,000 for a 2.5 metre high stainless steel piece. We standardly sell around 25% of the works on display, and it's not unusual for artists to receive commissions for other works out of the exhibition."

The artworks in the exhibition are displayed and judged in three categories: carved works, formed or cast works, and fabricated works and installations. Featuring works that are suitable for gardens, large properties, corporate environments and home decoration - including this year a life sized elephant pair priced at $46,500 - the exhibition is always popular with the crowds. "There is always a lot of interest", says Mark Cowie. "We generally get around 10-12,000 members' choice votes."

The sculpture exhibition can be viewed each day of the MIF&GS, which runs from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday 29th March to Sunday 2nd April (plus twilight closing at 9.30pm on Friday 31st March). The exhibition is located at the Grand Central Boulevarde (Section A84 on your MIF&GS map).

So make sure you swing by while you're visiting the show, and don't forget to vote for your favourite artwork.
