Explore the world under New York City. No, we don't mean take a tour of the sewers or the subway tunnels. We mean the underwater world of New York City. You can do that without even leaving the City itself, as there are some scuba shops in Manhattan as well as close to Central Park which offer dive lessons and dive sessions.
Pan Aqua: This dive shop located at 460 West 43rd Street in New York City. This company bills itself as the largest dive shop in the Manhattan and Tri-Cities area. Dive classes and dive trips start in May, after everything has finally thawed out and the water has warmed up at least a little bit.
You can receive diving lessons and diving certification through Pan Aqua, after which you'll be ready to join the guides and other divers on their dive trips. If you are already a certified diver, you can just skip the classes (of course) and make your reservation for one of the scheduled dive trips. You can even schedule private dive sessions if you like.
Adventure Scuba: This is a nationwide diving store/school chain with a location in New York City, at 1737 York Avenue, to be exact. This company also offers diving lessons and dive trips, beginning in May.
This company offers a "try before you buy" scuba class, which is a short session on what is involved in learning to scuba dive. You can attend this class and decide if this is something you're really interested in. If it is, and you most likely will be, you can arrange for more lessons through Adventure Scuba.
Adventure Scuba also offers an Emergency First Response course. This course does not apply to just diving emergencies; rather, it teaches you basic CPR and first aid so that you can help any time you see an emergency.
