Screen It is Australia's national film, animation and game making competition for school-age students. This yearly competition is designed to encourage imagination and inventiveness in primary and secondary school students, Screen It aim is to try and foster a new generation of young moving image makers with prizes given out to the winners and runner-ups to provide future assistance in their production process.

It is absolute free for school kids to enter and they can even submit multiple entries under three categories: animated film, live action and video games. The entries are then split into three different age groups: foundation to year 4, year 5 to 8 and year 9 to 12 to make it fair for the different levels of experience and technical skills.

On Friday the 18th of November 2016 I had the pleasure of attending the Screen It Awards for 2016 run by ACMI at Federation Square. It was both a fun and inspiring experience to say the least. Seeing the new generation of creatives come to life on the big screen was amazing. Gone are the days where creativity and art can only be expressed through traditional means of paintings and the written word the kids of these days can now choose to tell their stories and take their imaginations into the digital world.

The event was hosted by Steven "Bajo" O'Donnell and Stephanie "Hex" Bendixsen, hosts of ABC2's Good Game and Good Game SpawnPoint. The ceremony was in celebration of the students' efforts as aspiring creatives and giving the winners a chance to thank their parents, teachers and teams in some very well thought-out acceptance speeches, some equal to those at the Oscars.

This year the winners were selected from 587 entries, with 2521 students from every state following the 2016's Theme of Mystery. Compared to last year, there was a 20 per cent increase with entries taken from capital cities and regional areas of NSW, NT, QLD, TAS, VIC and WA.

It was amazing to see all the finalists and their work, the level of quality of the animation, video games and live films left me thinking "how did they do that so well" especially when you realise the maker behind the entry are only in grade 3.
