Scream (Pilot) - TV Series Review

Scream, the highly acclaimed slasher movie franchise known for its wicked humour and social commentary on pop culture and the horror genre itself, has been reborn into something entirely new and this time Ghost Face isn't around to take part in the mayhem!

The new mask design is somewhat scarier for the younger generations, but just lacks the character of the one worn throughout the films.

The new spin-off series, is very much apart from the Scream films we have all grown to love over the years. However there is whole new set of teens in a very different town with a different local serial killer legend of its own.

It delves into the modern world of technology that youths now have access to and how it can be used against them, from easy access to filming equipment and the ease of unwanted attention through intimate things going "viral", to voice activated technology and the ease of touch screen mobile phones which aren't always reliable.

The new and unknown killer (or killers) use technology flaws against their victims, time and time again, to "play a game" with them, before their fatal demise. The series, so far, doesn't lack the usual "horror movie commentary" and even goes into why you could never make a slasher movie into a television series.

The key difference between this new TV series and the original films is that it wants its viewers to really get into the life stories of its characters and really care about them, much like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. As a huge fan of the original films, I for one am really looking forward to seeing where this series may lead.

Will this new approach to Scream be a surviving success, or will it end up being just another bloody mess?

Only time will tell.

Scream the television series is not yet rated.

8/10
