Promoting research focusing on the nature, functions and mechanisms underlying consciousness is the primary goal of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (ASSC) . Part of this effort involves coordinating an annual conference, bringing together leaders in the fields of cognitive neuroscience, medicine, philosophy and several other related disciplines.
This year, for the first time, the 18th annual ASSC conference (ASSC18) will be held in Australia. The conference will be hosted by The Queensland Brain Institute at the University of Queensland's St Lucia Campus over four days. Located on a lush subtropical setting on a bend in the Brisbane River.

The conference opens an interesting short course addressing the integrated information theory of consciousness, a variety of tutorials followed by the opening night reception. Days 2-4 feature 4 keynote presentations, 4 symposia and a multitude of other interesting tutorials. The conference dinner will be held on day 3 at the Lone Pine Koala sanctuary. Following dinner, attendees will experience a guided, night-time tour of the sanctuary and have an opportunity to be photographed holding a koala.

The conference will be closed by a free public lecture held at the state library of Queensland in Southbank that will demonstrate how we can use modern neuroscience to communicate with patients in a vegetative state . The ASSC website features a full program along with summaries of all the tutorials, keynote presentations and symposia along with information regarding the conference dinner and other events.Accommodation is not included in the conference registration fee.

The ASSC website maintains a freely accessible archive of the Journal Psyche , published online from 1994 to 2010. It served as a platform for the interdisciplinary investigation into the nature of consciousness. The volumes available through the ASSC site explore some interesting questions and are perfect for those wanting to learn more about this field.
