Science and nature lovers, young and old, are invited to celebrate National Science Week at Centennial Parklands, at .

Returning for its fifth year, this free event includes a great mix of entertaining and educational science activities and experiences for both children and adults. It will be held on Saturday 12th August 2017, from 11am - 3pm.

So what can you expect to discover this year in the swamp? (FYI - there's no need to invest in gum boots or be worried about wet feet, the festival name is merely a nod to the history of the parklands).

The creative minds of Erth (makers of Erth's Dinosaur Zoo and Erth's Prehistoric Aquarium) will be bringing their unique combination of science and art to .

Ginger, a life size dinosaur puppet from Erth, is an Australovenator dinosaur which inhabited Australia in the mid-Cretaceus period, and is known as Australia's answer to the Velociraptor. While Ginger certainly looks fearsome she is actually quite friendly so make sure you stop for a chat if you see her roaming the grounds on the day.

For those interested in native animals from the present day, you won't want to miss the interactive wildlife presentations from Australian Wildlife Displays who will be bringing a range of native animals to the event. Animals may include marsupials, birds, lizards, pythons, frogs or even crocodiles. The show consists of an educational presentation followed by question time. You may even get an opportunity to touch, pat or hold some of the animals.

Another show you won't want to miss is the " King and Queen of Green" stage show. These royal environmental crusaders aim to introduce young audiences to important environmental issues such as reducing waste through methods such as composting, recycling and worm farms.

Children and adults can learn about the science of breadmaking with Galit Segev , a qualified food scientist and chef. In her Food Science stall children will enjoy an interactive hands-on activity where they can play with dough. There will also be information available about bread, gluten with a display of yeast wheat, spelt, rye barley and other grains.

If snakes are more your thing there will be a venomous snake show and stall by John Mostyn . This is where you can learn about snake behaviour, how to behave if you are confronted by a snake, venoms and its effect on the human body and importantly some first aid for snake bites.

At the Frog and Tadpole Study Group of NSW stall you can see a display of live frogs from their rescue service as well as information about the species on display and common garden frogs.

Tony the Carp Whisperer will also be on hand to introduce you to some of the big fish living in Centennial Park's ponds.

Other highlights of the day will include:

• Science stage shows
• Shark in a Bus
• University of NSW hands-on science tent
• Tesla electric car
• Aboriginal Science
• Tree art and science activities

There will also be food vans in attendance on the day including pizza and gozleme.

Entry to is free however some activities may incur a small charge to cover the cost of resources.

The event will run from 11am until 3pm on Saturday 12th August 2017. Centennial Parklands is located in the Sydney CBD. The meeting point for this event is the Education Precinct off Dickens Drive, Centennial Park.

As with previous years large crowds are expected at . Visitors are advised to plan ahead and consider public transport to avoid traffic and parking delays.
