One popular stop along the Warrego Highway in the Lockyer Valley is , which is famous for its small goods and paddock to plate products. If you can't get out there, they also provide local delivery from Toowomba to Ipswich, as well as national delivery for shelf-stable products.

About

Schulte's was founded in 1952 by Peter Wolfgang Schulte as both an abattoir and butcher shop. Catering to the large German population of the Lockyer Valley, he began manufacturing a range of German sausages and other smoked and cured meats.

The business is still family-owned and operated by Peter and Melinda Schulte who have continued many traditions while catering to modern tastes, trends and needs. It is now a one-stop show for meats, vegetables, wines and more, sourcing meats and other products locally. After all, the Lockyer Valley is among the top 10 most fertile valleys in the world and is often considered to be Australia's salad bowl.

What's Good at Schulte's?

The answer is, pretty much everything. But they have award-winning bacon which is a must for bacon lovers, as well as a wide range of great small goods. Many of the sausages use traditional curing techniques which not only taste great but travel well. This means you can throw them in your car without any refrigeration.

The Cheesy Kransky Sausages have also come highly recommended. These are fresh, not cured, so you need something to keep them cool when you buy them.

I was lucky enough to have the chance to try a wide selection of their sausages and other meats, and so I know there are far too many great products from Schulte's to make any meaningful recommendations. Just the plain meats are sourced from the paddock, while the smallgoods are made with great care.

From the hot food section, there is a great selection of pies. I lean towards the lamb pies, mostly because it is something that is hard to find elsewhere. Also, they are really delicious and I like lamb.

Local Delivery

They also do deliveries in an area that covers the Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba and Ipswich, with each area having deliveries once a week. You need to order at least $100 for delivery and orders over $150 are delivered for free. If your family are big meat eaters, you could go through this much in a week, though many people order big whenever their freezer is getting low.

In store pickup

You can also order in advance and do a pickup from the store. This is great for locals as well as anyone who knows that they will be passing by.

Mail Delivery

With their shelf-stable beer sticks, jerky and mettwurst, you can order these delivered to your home anywhere in Australia. They have orders from all across Australia. Some regular customers are people who have visited the Lockyer, and others who have learned about Schulte's from their reputation.

Overall

This family-run business is a Lockyer Valley institution. It is worth stopping to pick up a few or many different small goods, sausages and meats. If you are travelling in the area and want to self-cater, then this is where you go to buy your dinner, lunch and/or breakfast as you can do a complete shop here, including wines.
